Santa Cruz Island ( Spanish pronunciation: Ã, ['santa' k? us] ) is one of the Galápagos Islands with an area of ​​986 km 2 (381Ã, sqÃ, mi) and a maximum altitude of 864 meters (2.835Ã, ft). Located in the center of the archipelago, Santa Cruz is the second largest island after Isabela. The capital is Puerto Ayora, the most populous city center on the islands. In Santa Cruz there are several small villages, whose inhabitants work in agriculture and animal husbandry. This island is a large active volcano. It is estimated that the last eruption occurred about a million and a half years ago. There is a gigantic lava tunnel that is over 2000 meters in length on the island that many tourists visit and walk through. As testimony to the history of the volcano, there are two large holes formed by the collapse of the magma space: Los Gemelos, or "The Twins". Named after the Holy Cross, its English name (Indefatigable) is given after the British ship HMS Indefatigable . Santa Cruz has the largest human population in the archipelago in the city of Puerto Ayora, with a total of 12,000 inhabitants on the island.
