Caribe Hilton , located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is one of the most famous hotels in the Caribbean. It is the first facility operated by Hilton Hotels outside the continental United States.

In early 1946, as part of the industrialization effort of Puerto Rico known as Operation Bootstrap, Puerto Rico Industrial Development Co. decided to set up a modern luxury hotel. The facility will be owned by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, but it is leased to multinational hotel operators who offer a better offer. The hotel will have 300 bedrooms, additional facilities required, and is located adjacent to Fort San JerÃÆ'³nimo in Puerta de Tierra.
A competition was held to select the design, with three architectural firms in Puerto Rico invited: Schimmelpfennig, Ruiz y González; Henry Klumb's office; and Toro Ferrer. Two additional companies from Florida were also invited to participate: Frederick G. Seelman from Palm Beach and Robert Swartburg from Miami. Both companies are proposing Spanish-style Renaissance designs, while three Puerto Rican companies present modern designs inspired by the International style. The final design chosen was by Toro Ferrer, who also designed the Modern Supreme Court Building in San Juan.
To operate the hotel, Puerto Rico Industrial Development Co. invited seven leading American hotel companies. Conrad Hilton, originally from New Mexico, opened his mail back with "Mi estado amigo" and won Puerto Rico.
The hotel opened on December 9, 1949. It was the first Hilton hotel outside the continental United States and made Hilton the first international hotel company. The government-backed Puerto Rico Industrial Development Corp (PRIDCO) spends $ 7 million to build and equip the hotel. Once built, the government leases the hotel to Hilton Corp. with a 20-year lease. This hotel is the first in Puerto Rico offering radio in every room and individually controlled air conditioning.
Guests for the opening include Gloria Swanson, Eastern Air Lines, President Eddie Rickenbacker, David Rockefeller, and a host of other celebrities and characters.
This hotel claims to be the birthplace of PiÃÆ' Â ± a Colada. In 1954, bartender RamÃÆ'³n "Monchito" Marrero spent three months to make a mixture of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice. The drink was first presented on August 15, 1954.
The original hotel expanded over the years from 300 rooms to 646 rooms. After managing the hotel for 48 years, Hilton International purchased the property in 1998. Hilton closed the hotel the following year for a complete renovation, which lasted nine months. It reopened on December 25, 1999 to celebrate its 50th anniversary after a $ 50 million renovation.
In 2005, the hotel was expanded with the large Paseo Caribe complex, including shops, restaurants and 264 villas marketed as Condado Lagoon Villas.

Famous Guests
The first of many famous guests is Gloria Swanson and Gertrude Ederle. Between the 1960s and 1980s, many important players worked or stayed at the Caribe Hilton, including Marco Antonio MuÃÆ'Â ± iz. Other famous guests have included many world champion boxers during the golden era of boxing Puerto Rican. The national basketball team of twelve countries also stayed there for the 2003 pre-Olympic tournament in America.
In popular culture
Some scenes from Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie was filmed in various areas of the hotel, called Caribe Paradise Resort. This is also the setting for Hunter S. Thompson The Rum Diary . "22 Jump Street" was also filmed in the hotel lobby.
