SHOW SHAMU- SEAWORLD 2015 - YouTube
src: i.ytimg.com

This article refers to the SeaWorld killer whale show. For the original whale killer (orca) named Shamu, see Shamu

Shamu is the name used for some SeaWorld orca (killer whale) performances and is the stage name given to the "stars" of the event, starting with the original Shamu in the late 1960s, and the early 1970s. Orca Shamu died in 1971, but the name Shamu is a trademark by SeaWorld (as well as the names "Namu" and "Ramu") and has been given to different orcas at different times when performing Shamu performances.

In March 2016, SeaWorld announced that they are ending their orca breeding program by creating their current orcas, "the last generation of orcas in SeaWorld care." SeaWorld also announced that they would gradually stop their orca theater performances and would introduce, "new orca meetings, inspiring, natural rather than theatrical performances,... [focus] on orca enrichment, exercise and overall health"

Florida Shamu

The first "Baby Shamu" named Kalina. He was the first surviving orca born in captivity on 26 September 1985. Ten orca calves had been born in captivity before 1985, but five were stillborn and others all died within two months of their birth. Kalina's parents, Katina and Winston, were awarded the names of Kandu VI (Katina) and Ramu (Winston). The stage name of "Grandbaby Shamu" was given to Kalina's eldest son, who was born on February 2, 1993 - a man named Keet. The first "Grandbaby Shamu" was Keet's eldest son, born on December 21, 2004 - a woman named Kalia. Kalia gave birth to the "Great Grand Grandbaby Shamu" Amaya the first, on December 2, 2014. The father is Ulises.

Shamu performances have been presented at the following SeaWorld park:

  • SeaWorld San Diego in California
  • SeaWorld Ohio (close in 2000)
  • SeaWorld Orlando in Florida
  • SeaWorld San Antonio in Texas

The orca show has been held at SeaWorld's Shamu Stadium (s), which each seats 5,500, and all performances have involved sections where one or more whales splashed the audience. San Diego performances usually end with a hangglider landing at or near the stadium.
