The Star was a famous restaurant in San Francisco, California, from 1984 to 1999. Together with Spago, Michael, and Chez Panisse, this was regarded as one of the birthplace of California cuisine, New American cuisine, and celebrity chef institutions.

History

Jeremiah Tower, former Chez Panisse chef, opened the Star at 150 Redwood Alley near San Francisco City Hall in 1984, along with investors from Berkeley's Fourth Street Grill and Santa Fe Bar and Grill. With its luxurious interiors, busy open kitchen, and tireless preference for socialites and celebrities, the Star and its pioneering approach to food and eating are an instant sensation.

The restaurant was among the top-rated restaurants in the United States for many years. The tower opens the Oakville Stars restaurant branch in Oakville (Napa Valley), Palo Alto, Manila, and Singapore. He opened The Peak Cafe in Hong Kong in the 1990s, as well as related businesses in San Francisco including a more casual cafe and upscale Stars Cafe bistro, next door, another restaurant nearby known as Speedo 690 located at 690 Van Ness The Avenue is described. by the Tower as "romantic Polynesian cuisine", and a kitchen utensil store. His side business always failed, and by the late 1990s even Stars began to lose money quickly because of their inability to attract sufficient numbers of wealthy visitors who could support a high restaurant overhead. The stars closed in late 1999, after which the "Bitter" Tower stated that he finished with California.

Upon departure the Tower restaurant is reopened briefly by a new investor of the same name but with a cheaper Mediterranean concept. In 2004 it became the new location of San Francisco's Trader Vic, which had been closed since 1994. The location of Palo Alto of Stars became a branch of Spago Restaurant Wolfgang Puck in 1997.
