Kantishna is an unincorporated community in Denali Borough, Alaska, United States, in Denali National Park and Preserve. Established as a gold mining camp in 1905, it lasts longer than any similar community in the area, which has been built closest to a gold source. It lies in the Kantishna Hills at the intersection of Eureka Creek and Moose Creek, 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Wonder Lake, and near the mouth of the Kantishna River. Although the community was once also called "Eureka", the Council on Geographical Names officially voted in favor of "Kantishna" in 1944, the name given to the post office built on the site in 1905. Its elevation is 1,696 feet (517 m).

Geology

Several thousand miners came to the Kantishna Hills area after gold placer was discovered in the summer of 1905 along Glacier Creek by Joe Quigley and Jack Horn. Almost simultaneously, Joe Dalton and his partner Stiles found gold along Friday Creek and staked claims on July 12. Claims at Eureka Creek soon followed as well as mining towns. These include Glacier in Bearpaw River, Diamond in Moose Creek, plus Roosevelt and Square Deal at McKinley River. In 1906 the town of Roosevelt, Square Deal and Diamond was largely empty. In 1916, the population in the region was 35, half of whom were men working claims.

Gold placer comes from the schist Birch Creek, which is cut by quartz bearing gold, silver, and antimony veins in stibnite form. This skis is the oldest formation in the region and bordered on the south by Tonzona Group consisting of black slabs and argillites, and Tatina Group consists of black plates, argillites, graywackes, and interbedded limestones and cherts.
