History
Initially, the hotel chain was set up in 1984 as a Hampton Inn , a cheap hotel by Holiday Corporation. The first hotel is a two-story exterior entrance building with 128 guest rooms located in Memphis, Tennessee. At the end of 1989, after some financial difficulties, Holiday Corporation prepared to sell its hotel at Holiday Inn and start the parent company Promus Hotel Corporation, which included Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites, and Homewood Suites. With this change, Promus is reinvested in the Hampton Inn brand and begins its change from cheap hotels to mid-class hotels to compete with new brands they sell. The hotel chain is the first hotel among the midsize hotels offering a free continental breakfast and the first introducing a "100 percent satisfaction guarantee." In 1990, the Hampton Inn chain included more than 220 properties with over 27,000 rooms. Hampton Inn and Suites was introduced in 1995, featuring two-room hotel suite rooms complete with living room and kitchen area.
In 1999, the Promus Hotel Corporation was purchased by Hilton Worldwide for $ 3.7 billion. In 2004, as part of a $ 100 million "Make it Hampton" initiative, Hampton began upgrading its hotels including the production of alarm clocks featuring easily configurable alarms and mp3 players. Other changes made during the upgrade were the switch to a white bed, adding hot food to a continental breakfast option and free high-speed internet to the room. In 2012, under the "Perfect Mix" initiative, the company completed an upgrade to its hotel lobbies that added social space. Hampton continues to renovate its space with a campaign introduced in 2013, aimed at young customers that include a mini-fridge in the room, a new bedside table with electric access, the latest bathrooms, and an updated hotel exterior. Hampton by Hilton has been ranked the top 5 in Entrepreneur's Franchise 500 from 2010-2015.
Today Hampton is in the upper middle-class inn segment, designed to compete with Fairfield Inn by Marriott, Holiday Inn Express, and Comfort Inn/Comfort Suites.
