In 2012, UC Irvine medical professor Robin Eckert sued Depp and three security companies, claiming to have been attacked by his bodyguards at a concert in Los Angeles in 2011. During the incident, he was allegedly handcuffed and dragged 40 feet across the floor, resulting in an injury including a dislocated elbow. He argued in court that, as the security guard's direct manager, Depp failed to intervene, even though he did not actively take part in the battery. In October 2012, it was decided that Eckert may request compensation and punitive damages from Depp, with a trial date set for August 12, 2013. Depp finally settled with Eckert for an undisclosed amount.
In April 2015, Heard and Depp violated Australia's strict biosecurity laws when they failed to announce their two Yorkshire Terriers to the Australian Customs Service when they flew on a private jet to Queensland, where he worked in installment pirates. Australian quarantine rules, which aim to prevent rabies from leaving the country, require dogs from abroad to be quarantined for at least ten days. Heard was charged with two allegations of illegally importing dogs into the country and one count resulted in a fake document. Shortly after that, Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said, "If we start letting movie stars even though they have become the 'living humanity's two sisters' twice to come to our country, then why do not we break the law for everyone? Political and religious views
Depp told the German magazine Stern in 2003 that "America is stupid, is something like a dumb dog with a big tooth - that can bite and hurt you, aggressively." Although he later asserted that the magazine misquoted him and his words were taken out of context, Stern stood next to his story, as did CNN.com in his coverage of the interview. CNN added his statement that he wants his children "to see America as a toy, a broken toy, invest a little, check it out, get this feeling and get out." The July 17, 2006 edition of Newsweek reprinted the "stupid puppy" quote, word for word, in the context of Letter to Magazine. Depp also disagreed with the subsequent media reports that regarded him as "European wannabe", saying that he liked the anonymity of living in France while in relation to Paradis and his simpler life there. Depp became a US resident again in 2011, because France wanted him to be a permanent resident, which he said would require him to pay income taxes in both countries.
On the October 16, 2011 episode of Larry King Live, when asked if she had confidence, Depp replied, "Yes, I have confidence in my children and I have - I have faith, you know, that as long as you keep moving forward, keep moving forward, everything will be all right, I think, you know.S Faith in religion, I do not - religion is not my specialty, you know. Native American ancestral claim
In an interview in 2002 and 2011, Depp claimed she had Native American ancestors, and that "I was told that I was a Cherokee when he was little. I was told that I was Indian Creek as a kid and Chickasaw." He also claims that his "great-grandmother is a little Native American." He has no evidence for this claim, only personal beliefs and knowledge of Kentucky among non-Natives. The Depp pedigree has since been done by third-party researchers, who find an ancestor who he believes to be a native in fact has a very distant African-American ancestry. Apart from this discovery, Depp continues to claim or imply that he is a Native. The critical response to his claim from the Indigenous community also includes satirical depictions of Depp by Native comedians.
