About

Blackstone was built by Banker Realty Investment Company as a residential hotel in 1915. Residents generally rent in years rather than days and receive hotel services. Although there is one room unit, most are suites with six to eight rooms. Each floor has four glass rooms and ornate furniture.

In 1920, the building was bought by Charles Schimmel, an immigrant from Vienna. After transforming Blackstone into a regular hotel, it soon became a "symbol of elegance" and gained nationally high stature as the premier hotel between Chicago and San Francisco along the Lincoln Highway. Among its amenities the hotel keeps a small fleet of Pierce-Arrow limousines to visit the distinguished guests who arrive in Omaha by train and its own magazine, The Blackstonian ; there is also a ballroom, roof garden and award-winning restaurant. A restaurant called the Orleans Room is the most famous Blackstone, and received the Holiday Magazine Award for Excellence for 16 years in a row. Throughout the 1970s, this building was one of the most successful elegant small hotels in the country.

In 1968, Radisson Hotel Corporation bought the hotel and operated it until 1976. Blackstone was renovated for use as an office in 1984 and renamed the Blackstone Center.

In September 2007, Kiewit Corporation, one of five Fortune 500 companies based in Omaha, announced it would buy Blackstone. It is expected that the company will eventually utilize the entire building.
