Histori

Vail was founded in 1966, four years after the opening of Vail Ski Resort. The ski area was founded by Pete Seibert and local breeder Earl Eaton in 1962, at the base of the Vail Pass. The graduate was named after Charles Vail, a highway engineer who directed US Highway 6 through Eagle Valley in 1940, eventually becoming Interstate 70. Seibert, a native New England native, served in the 10th Army Mountain Division during World War II, who trained at Camp Hale, 14 miles south of Vail between Red Cliff and Leadville. He was injured in Italy at the Battle of Riva Ridge but later became a professional skier after he recovered.

Seibert, with another former member of the 10th Mountain Division, returned to Colorado after World War II with the intention of opening a ski resort. During his training for the ski troop at Camp Hale, he bivouacked in Vail Mountain and identified it as the ideal ski mountain. In the early 1960s, Seibert got funding from a group of Colorado investors, including Jack Tweedy, and with Earl Eaton buying a farm at the foot of the mountain and eventually being included as Vail Associates. As plans continue for a new ski resort, Seibert employs Morrie Shepard as director of Vail's first ski school. Shortly after, Shepard recruited Rod Slifer from Aspen to become assistant director of the ski school. Slifer was also the only real estate broker in Vail's early years and would later become a broker in a transaction that allowed Vail to buy a farm, now known as the world-famous Beaver Creek.

In December 1962 Vail officially opened for his first season. It operates a gondola lift and two mountain ski lifts owned by the US Forest Service. The village is set at the foot of the mountain for the locals and offers lodging for visitors. It quickly grew up across the valley with the first added housing in East Vail and then West Vail, and additional lodging added at Lionshead in the late 1960s. In the early years the village had a ski shop operated by John Houserman, a hotel and restaurant operated by Pepi Gramshammer, and the mountain had a manager. In 1969 Vail was the most popular ski resort in the state. In 1988 Vail opened the China Bowl, making Vail the largest ski area in North America.

Transportation

Vail is served by Eagle County Airport near Gypsum, 30 miles to the west. Native Americans used to call the area near the airport as a "hole in the sky" because the storm seemed to avoid it. Vail is modeled in European ski towns, many of which are car-free, and the city is partly pedestrianized. The Inter-City Service provides services every five minutes during the peak of winter, and every 15 minutes off-peak, between Golden Peak, Vail Village, business district and Lionshead, with live schedule information provided at the bus stop by Global Positioning System technology, which tracks the bus. Another route centered on Eastern and Western Transportation Center services on schedule, but less frequently.

Highway

Interstate 70 runs east-west past the middle of Vail and the only way to or from Vail, by way of exit at East Vail, at the base of the Vail Pass, the town of Vail, and West Vail. From the east, the highway came from Denver, 97 miles away, past the Eisenhower Tunnel and past the Continental Divide, past the Loveland Pass, and past the Vail Pass, crashing into the Vail Valley. To the west, he meets US Highway 24 in Dowd Junction, passes Avon, Edwards, Colorado, and Eagle, via Glenwood Canyon travel and to Grand Junction, and reaches Utah, where he ends at intersection with Interstate 15.

In West Vail, the US Highway 6 (which still serves as a service road between East Vail, Vail, and West Vail) fuses with I-70 at Dowd Junction. The I-70 roughly follows the original Highway 6 route to two more highways in Silverthorne, 31 miles east.
