David Swift wrote the screenplay for the original 1961 film based on Lottie and Lisa. This story is comparable to the 1936 Deanna Durbin movie Three Smart Girls . Swift is credited with Meyers and Shyer as co-authors of the 1998 version. The film received positive reviews.

Plot

In 1986, American Nicholas "Nick" Parker (Dennis Quaid) and Briton Elizabeth "Liz" James (Natasha Richardson) met, fell in love, and married during a sea voyage on "Queen Elizabeth 2". After the birth of their identical twins, Annie and Hallie (Lindsay Lohan), they divorce and each have custody of a girl. Nick, the wealthy wine-owner, picked up Hallie in Napa Valley, California, and Elizabeth brought Annie up in London, England, and was a successful wedding dress designer.

Eleven and nine months later, Nick and Elizabeth accidentally sent their daughters to Camp Walden, a summer camp of women in Maine. Hallie and Annie, who did not know each other, instantly disliked each other. After the battle, they were isolated together as punishment until the camp was completed. They finally discover that they are twins and hatch plans for each to meet parents they have never met. Hallie imitated Annie's English accent and went to London to meet their mother, grandfather, and Martin (Simon Kunz) the butler. Annie adopted a Hallie American accent and flew to Napa Valley to see Dad and Chessy (Lisa Ann Walter) the housekeeper. After discovering that their father was engaged to a child haters, gold digger Meredith Blake (Elaine Hendrix), Annie and Hallie plot to reunite Elizabeth and Nick by telling Elizabeth that Nick wanted to meet him in San Francisco. Chessy, Martin, and grandfather Charles discover the secret plans of the girls. Nick was surprised, but pleased to see Elizabeth after all these years. Meanwhile, Chessy and Martin grow romantically attracted to each other. Despite the girls 'best efforts, including re-making their parents' night, they failed to reunite Nick and Elizabeth. They made the last effort by demanding a three-day family camping trip, refusing to reveal which twin they were until after they returned. The trick Elizabeth Meredith took her place on a camping trip. The girls played a number of jokes at Meredith, who became angry and gave Nick the ultimatum; choose the girls. Nick broke off their engagement, realizing the truth about him.

Nick and Elizabeth realized that they still had feelings for each other, but decided it was better to split up. Elizabeth and Annie then boarded the plane for London, but when they arrived, they found Hallie and Nick waiting for them (they had picked up a faster flight at Concorde). Nick realizes his previous mistake did not happen after Elizabeth when he left her. The photos show Nick and Elizabeth marry again "Queen Elizabeth 2", with the girls as bridesmaids, and Martin proposes to Chessy.

Transmission and character

  • Dennis Quaid, as Nicholas "Nick" Parker, Annie and Hallie's father, a rich American wine maker.
  • Natasha Richardson, as Elizabeth "Liz" James, Annie and Hallie's mother, a designer of the famous British wedding dress.

  • Simon Kunz, as Martin, the butler of the James family, is in love with Chessy.
  • Ronnie Stevens, as Charles James, Elizabeth's father and maternal grandfather Annie and Hallie. After she catches her on the phone with Annie, she tells him about where to move.

  • J. Patrick McCormack, as Les Blake, Meredith's father.
  • Joanna Barnes, as Vicki Blake, Meredith's mother.
  • Elaine Hendrix, like Meredith Blake, a 26-year-old boy and a gold digger who plans to marry Nick.

  • Maggie Wheeler, as Marva Kulp, Jr., Marva Kulp, daughter and assistant Sr.

Lindsay's mother, Dina, and her brothers, Michael, Ali, and Cody, all appeared in a brilliant acting at the airport. Michael also appeared in the film as a boy who accidentally ended up at Camp Walden, mistaking it for a boy's camp. Erin Mackey is a cast member of Lindsay's replacement for Hallie and Annie. Joanna Barnes, who in the original 1961 film plays Vicki Robinson, a gold digger who hates children who want to marry the girl's dad because of her money, appears in the film as Vicki Blake, the mother of a Meredith gold hunter who hates children. Character Marva Kulp, Sr. and Marva Kulp, Jr. most likely named after actress Nancy Kulp, who served as a camp counselor in the original 1961 film. The scene where Nick sees Elizabeth and leans in the elevator is a repetition of classic scenes of Cary Grant and Irene Dunne from My Favorite Wife.

Music

The song used in the opening sequence where the first glimpse of Nick and Elizabeth's looks is Nat King Cole "L-O-V-E". The song used in the final credits, where the photographs of Nick and Elizabeth's second marriage are seen, are his daughter Natalie Cole "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)".

The instrumental music prominent in the hotel scene where the girls and their parents intersected the path of chance was "In the Mood", previously made famous by the band Glenn Miller. The song is also quoted above the Walt Disney Pictures logo, and at the end of Alan Silvestri's credit closing series.

When Hallie appeared in Annie's poker game at Camp Walden, the music used was "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood and Destroyers.

The background song that is heard in the bonfire scene is "How Bizarre" by the OMC music group.

Deleted scene

The slot scene between Hallie and Martin meets at Heathrow Airport, and Hallie meets her mother and grandfather. Hallie is in the limo and they find Buckingham Palace. He came out and tried to get one of the guards to move. The guards then crowded around the formation when Elizabeth II of England came out of Buckingham Palace in the car. The window rolled over and Hallie spoke to the Queen, confused with 'Your Highness' or 'Your Highness' or whether to bow. The Queen promises not to tell her soul and move. Director Nancy Meyers has difficulty getting uniforms, locations, and actresses to act as Queen. The scene was deleted because of the pacing problem.

Another deleted scene appeared in a trailer that debuted in 1998. The scene shows Hallie standing on the deck of her vineyard home. He saw the shooting star and sang the poem "Star Light, Star Bright". Annie was standing outside her window too.

In the original script script, many scenes are changed or deleted. A long scene that pierced incoming ears. Putting the needle through Annie's ear, Hallie screamed and fainted. Annie gently slaps her on the face, trying to wake her. After Hallie wakes up, she asks Annie, "Do you bleed to death? Is that sick?" Annie says no to both questions and shows Hallie the needle again, and tells her to finish with the others because she (Annie) will not live life with just one ear being pierced. Hallie fainted again.

In a long scene, Elizabeth investigates further why she and Nick do not live together. He said, "I'm trying to live in California, he's trying to live in London...". Hallie replied, "So you broke up?" Elizabeth told Hallie that she and Annie were the best about the whole situation and they kept walking on the streets of London.

There's an extended ending in which Hallie tells Annie: "You'd love to live in California." For what Annie said: "California? You will all love to live in London." Then she answered "London?" In the front yard, Sammy barks to the poodle next to him as Chessy and Martin are kissing and Charles comes home.
