The Last Song is an American teen romance drama in 2010 developed in conjunction with 2009 novel Nicholas Sparks of the same name. The film was directed by Julie Anne Robinson in the feature film director's debut and co-written by Sparks and Jeff Van Wie. The Last Song starred in Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth, and Greg Kinnear and followed a troubled teenager as he reconnected with his estranged father and fell in love over the summer in the quiet southern coastal city of the United States.

Sparks was approached to write both the screenplay and the novel. Sparks completed the scenario in January 2009, before the completion of the novel, making The Last Song the first script selected for the movie. The setting, originally in North Carolina like a novel, moved to Georgia after countries have been campaigning for months to host the production. After starting production at Tybee Island, Georgia and nearby Savannah, The Last Song became the first film to be filmed and placed on Tybee Island. The filming took place from 15 June to 18 August 2009 with most happening on the beach and the island's pier. The Last Song was released by Touchstone Pictures on March 31, 2010. Upon its release, the film received a negative response from critics, particularly against scenarios and casting.

Plot

At the age of seventeen, Veronica "Ronnie" Miller (Miley Cyrus) remained as rebellious as her parents divorced and her father moved to Georgia three years earlier. After an incredible classical piano boy under the care of his father, Steve Miller (Greg Kinnear), Ronnie now ignores the instrument and has not spoken to his father since he left. While Juilliard School was attracted to him since he was younger, Ronnie refused to attend.

Steve now has a chance to reconnect with his estranged daughter when his mother Kim Miller (Kelly Preston) sends his rebel teenager and younger brother, Jonah (Bobby Coleman), to spend the summer with him. Steve, a former professor of Juilliard School and a concert pianist, lived a quiet life at Wrightsville Beach, the small coastal town in Georgia where he grew up, working on stained glass windows for a local church to replace the lost church in fire.. According to locals, it was Steve who accidentally burned the church one night.

Upon arrival, Ronnie became miserable, defiant and defensive against everyone around him, including the popular and handsome Will Blakelee (Liam Hemsworth) whose accomplice bumped into him during a volleyball match, and inadvertently spilled Ronnie's strawberry turmoil on him. He picks her up and meets Blaze, the outcast who lives with her boyfriend, Marcus. While at the beach fire place, Marcus hit Ronnie and Blaze made this mistake because Ronnie teased him. Angry with this, Blaze then framed Ronnie for shoplifting, causing his capture. Later, Ronnie finds a loggerhead nest on the beach by his house and while protecting him, he meets Will again on a voluntary work for the aquarium. After a night of staying up to defend the turtle eggs from predators with Will, he finds himself deeper than he had expected, and begins to develop feelings for her.

The next day, Will takes Ronnie to where he works to show him the aquarium. After they had gone to the beach, Ashley appeared and told Ronnie about Will's past relationships and how to take them to see the aquarium was his routine, making Ronnie doubting his feelings for him. Will find it in the turtle's nest and they have arguments about his past relationships. When Ronnie suggests he does not want to be the other girl on the list and that they should end their relationship forever, Will will hug him and they kiss passionately, proving his feelings for him because he says that he's "unlike the other girls." Marcus broke up with Blaze because he wants Ronnie, who guides him and Will fights at Megan's wedding.

Ronnie immediately heard a rumor that his father set fire to a church from some locals. Confused, he goes to Will and laments about the situation. Will, knowing that his friend Scott was playing with the church burning, overwhelmed with guilt and going to Steve to apologize. When Ronnie comes to hear this, he walks out and Will follows where they quarrel and break up. Will left. Autumn arrives and Jonah returns to New York for school year. Ronnie stays behind to look after their father, who reveals to Ronnie & amp; Jonah during the summer that he was seriously ill. Leading a slow life, he tried to redeem time with his father that he was lost. He continues to work on the composition he has written (entitled "For Ronnie"), after losing his hand with his illness. He died when he finished it.

At his funeral he stood up to make a speech but declared that no word could show how beautiful his father was. Instead, he decides to share with them the songs he helps to finish. Before he sat down to play, the sun shone through the stained glass windows. Ronnie smiled and said, "Hi, Daddy," remembering what he heard his father say to Jonah in the previous movie; that every time the light shines through the window, that's it.

Blaze and other townspeople offer Ronnie's friendly and sympathetic words after the funeral outside. Then, speaking to the maids, he ran to Will. He said that he liked the song he played and he knew his father did it too and Ronnie thanked him for coming. After deciding to attend Juilliard, Ronnie packs to return to New York when he sees Will standing outside. She goes outside to see it and Will apologizes to her for everything that has happened and Ronnie forgives her. It will surprise Ronnie by revealing that he will move to Columbia to be with him and they are eagerly kissing.

Credit finally shows Ronnie driving in his car and smiling to himself.

Production

Development

The Last Song begins when Disney executive Jason Reed meets with Miley Cyrus to discuss his future career plan. At that time, Cyrus has been known primarily for starring as a pop star on the Disney Channel Hannah Montana , a children's television series that has evolved into a globally successful media franchise. As the series approaches the end, Disney hopes to make a stellar vehicle to help Cyrus out of the pop persona he developed through the franchise and introduce Cyrus to an older audience. During his encounter with Reed, Cyrus expressed a desire to film a film similar to A Walk to Remember , a 2002 film based on Nicholas Sparks novel. A Walk to Remember helped Mandy Moore, then a teen pop star like Cyrus, started an acting career. Disney is called Adam Shankman, director of A Walk to Remember, who signed to produce a potential Cyrus film alongside his sister and partner Offspring Entertainment production company Jennifer Gibgot. Tish Cyrus, Cyrus's mother and co-manager, became the film's executive producer. The representative acts Cyrus, United Talent Agency, then contacts Sparks, also a UTA client, to ask if he has plans for a suitable novel for a movie adaptation starring Cyrus.

At that point, Sparks has wrapped up the Lucky One and begins to contemplate the original plot for the next book. The author tells himself that he can be "younger than 20 or older than 50", having recently written about every age between the two. Carefully exploring above 50 again after Sparks's best-seller Sparks was leaning towards writing teenage stories when he received a phone call from Gibgot on behalf of the film in August 2008. Sparks was summoned, "Jennifer asks if I have something laying in? I say no, but it's funny you have to say that..." Sparks returned with the premise at the end of July 2008. After the proposal was approved by Cyrus, his family, and Offspring Entertainment, Sparks, playwright Jeff Van Wie, completing the scenario before starting the book. Sparks explained that such arrangements were necessary to accommodate the filming of the summer of 2009, as Disney had scheduled, but "this is similar to the way the films are based on my novels, it's just irregular." Sparks and Van Wie completed the first draft of the scenario in December 2008, the first rewrite of the month, and a second and final rewrite in January 2009. Both rewrites took about a day or two, and Sparks found them relatively simple. Scenario completes about 100 pages. While The Last Song is not the first scenario that Sparks has written, this is the first film chosen for the movie. The novel was completed in June 2009, the same time shooting for the film began, and was published on September 8, 2009 by Grand Central Publishing. Plot films and novels remain secret throughout the development.

Julie Anne Robinson signed to direct the movie in May 2009, attracted by the emotion that is in the story. The Last Song is Robinson's first film, though she is a veteran on television and theater. Robinson previously led episodes of American series such as Weeds and Gray's Anatomy and earned Golden Globe nominations and BAFTA awards for his work on the BBC series Viva Blackpool.

In a June 2009 blog entry, Cyrus said he was "always a fan of Nicholas Sparks" and that he had been waiting to do a separate production of Hannah Montana franchises "for a long time," but found no time to do so TV shows, music, tours, and Hannah Montana: The Movie . To film The Last Song , Cyrus's contract for season four of Hannah Montana includes an extra long hiatus.

Writing and titles

Acknowledging the popularity of A Walk to Remember either as a novel or a movie Sparks put all his thoughts into it, trying to make the story different from A Walk to Remember as [he can] , but try to capture the same feelings. "Sparks's experience as a father and as a high school and field coach also helped shape the storyline, and the characters of Jonah Miller and Will Blakelee are each based on the sons of Sparks, Landon and Miles. Sparks feels Ronnie is the most difficult character to write because he "never becomes a 17-year-old and angry teenage girl". Ronnie became a composite character inspired by several young women known to Sparks, like his niece. Cyrus himself had little influence on Ronnie, although his singing career inspired the musical elements of the story. Ronnie just plays the piano and Cyrus just sings a little in the movie, though he contributes to his soundtrack.

Disney does not limit Sparks to topics featured in The Last Song , which includes underage drinking, infidelity and terminal illness but Sparks says that Disney wants to work with him partly because "they've read my novel, my teen... do not do bad things, I do not write it, I do not write about adultery, I do not write indecent words... I will definitely have a love scene in my novel, but they are always among the approved adults. "However, Sparks acknowledges that the elements of the scenario may have been reduced by the director or studio once he or she is finished. As determined by the Writer Guild of America, Sparks received full credit for his work even though the number of original manuscripts remains in the film is uncertain. For example, Sparks says Marcus's character, the leader of a gang of thugs, is likely to be changed for the film.

The project remained anonymous for several months after Sparks's initial meeting with Disney in July 2008. Sparks wrote in an online chat September 2008 that "I have a complete idea, but no title is common to me though. " The film is referenced by the title of "Untitled Miley Cyrus Project". In March 2009, Variety Casting

Cyrus chose the name "Ronnie" for his character in honor of his grandfather, Ron Cyrus, who died in 2006. Unknown to many characters who were first named "Kirby" by Sparks and later changed to "Hilary". A new interview with Sparks revealed he imagined Cyrus in a "little bit" role during the writing process. The completion of the scenario, triggering Sparks that Cyrus will not be able to successfully perform the role: "The first thing I think of when I finish the scenario is, wow, I hope he can do this, it's a difficult role because I'm taking you through the overall emotion and you're just a 16-year-old girl doing Disney Channel.Would you be able to do this as an actress? ", After visiting the set and watching Cyrus's movie, Sparks' worries subsided. To play New York teens, Cyrus works with dialect trainers to remove Southern accents and learn to play classical pianos. After the filming, Cyrus says that in the case of the art of imitating life, he has grown and "changed a lot" during his summer in Georgia, similar to what Ronnie did in the movie. "Showing this movie, I feel like I'm really showing part of my growth as a person too, so I'm really excited for people to see it."

In April 2009, Disney officials chose Rafi Gavron for part of Will Blakelee, but switched to Australian actor Liam Hemsworth in May. On May 18, 2009, the decision to cast Greg Kinnear as Steve Miller made the final. Kelly Preston's part as Kim was the first role she received since the death of her son, Jett Travolta. After being introduced to Cal Johnson, movie action coordinator Adam Barnett landed Teddy's role in May 2009 because of his previously developed talent in juggling and hackey sacks.

Postproduction

The Last Song entered postproduction following the end of filming on August 18, 2009. Automatic dialog overturns occurred in mid-September; Beals and Chaikin stated they went in to record on September 11 and September 18 respectively. Chaikin says he has been working for five and a half hours. The director's cuts were presented to the studio on October 1, 2009. The American Film Association reviewed the film and published it a PG rating for "thematic material, some violence, sensuality and light language" three weeks later.

Filming

Move to Georgia

The Last Song was originally set at Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington in North Carolina. Although they wanted to shoot on the spot, the filmmakers also examined three other countries and identified Georgia as the next best filming location. Georgia's housing prices are higher, but the country's filmmaking incentive package returns 30% of production costs such as gasoline, pencils, and salaries. The North Carolina package refunds 15% and wages more than $ 1 million. However, Disney remains interested in North Carolina and offers to film there if the country will reduce the amount that the company will keep in Georgia, about $ 1 million, by half. North Carolina officials are looking for ways to achieve this, including applying unsuccessful state grants and the Golden LEAF Foundation. They also introduced legislation to increase state revenues by 25%, finally endorsed on August 27, 2009. Disney decided to work in existing incentive laws and agreed to film in North Carolina as long as the movie rights they purchased from Sparks counted as production costs, thus saving the company an additional $ 125,000 to $ 225,000. Then-North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue made a press conference on April 1, 2009 to announce the victory of N.C. North Carolina's tax collector refused to consider the film's rights, forcing Perdue to cancel the conference at the last second. "I hope to say that it will come and now I do not know that I will say it," said Perdue. "No one knows what will happen [...] I do not know what numbers they get from Georgia, but Georgia wants it so badly, and we really want it, and on Monday [April 6, 2009], there will be four or five "Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission, explains:" Disney made a big screen movie, they also made television series, they made an individual movie for Disney Channel, with the loss of this one project, in essence, we has lost all that opportunity. "He also noted the loss of jobs and filmmaking the tourism will be made.

On April 9, 2009, after three months of consideration, the decision to move to Georgia was made final. To determine a particular city, scout locations explore the country for aged, isolated, oceanfront properties to be used as Miller family homes in movies. After three months and the discovery of "Adams Cottage" on the southern tip of Tybee Island, Tybee and its neighboring location became a shoot in late March, with the intent of posing as Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. , Local proved too unique to disguise. "We are having a hard time trying to hide the fact that this is Tybee and Savannah is Savannah," said Bass Hampton, director of the film's location. The filmmaker convinces the screenwriter to change the settings of the film and to Tybee Island, allowing them to combine landmarks such as Tybee Island Light Station and Savannah Historic District. Sparks's novel background is still in North Carolina. Although other films have been filmed on Tybee Island, The Last Song is the first film to be filmed and broadcast on Tybee Island. With city names emblazoned on everything from police cars to businesses, Georgian officials predict the long-term impact on the economy. In addition, The Last Song is estimated to have brought up to 500 summer jobs to Georgia, $ 8 million for local businesses, and $ 17.5 million for state businesses.

Set

Nelson Coates is a production designer for The Last Song , responsible for all visual aspects of the film. Coates, who was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on Stephen King's television miniseries The Stand, arrived 11 weeks before the start of filming for preparation. While most of the filming takes place on the coast of Tybee Island naturally or on pre-construction private property, Coates oversees the re-painting of the dock and the construction of carnivals and churches.

Scout locations have been searching the whole of Georgia for an old and isolated seaside property to be used as home for Miller for nearly three months before scouts Andy Young found "Adams Cottage" on the southern end of Tybee Island. "It's starting at zero," Young said. "Often, it's about home, it could be a character in the movie itself." The homeowner, Sam Adams, welcomed the filming as "an opportunity to immortalize the house," if it was destroyed by a storm. This two-storey, six-bedroom house was built by Adams's great-grandfather in 1918 and is made entirely of hardwood pine with a bit of painted surface. According to Savannah Morning News reporter Lesley Conn, it's "built in a classic ramble-style beach [... designed] to allow the sea breeze to sweep through the wide wraparound porches into the cool and cool pine chambers. "

The church building was built for six weeks on a vacant lot at the corner of 13th Street and Sixth Avenue, near the residence houses. The one-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot (190 m 2 ) building houses about 80 people and is estimated to be worth $ 250,000 to $ 350,000. Special effects co-ordinator Will Purcell soothes worries about the church burning scene by stating that the building is not actually burning. The threatening effect is "all the camera angles. This is a safe environment for principals to do their work." Some techniques are used to simulate fire, including the use of propane pipes to fire fire through church windows. At the end of the shoot, Cyrus hopes to fly the church back to his family's home in Tennessee. Disney agreed to donate the building to the island after Tybee officials lobbied to keep it, on condition that his relationship with The Last Song was not advertised. The set will be moved to a new location and taken to the code to be used as a non-denominational chapel for marriage on the island; Renovations are estimated to cost around $ 600,000.

Schedule photo shoot

Cyrus's busy schedule requires filming to take place during the summer. Sparks noted, "She got a fall music tour and then she came back filming Hannah Montana again in spring, so the only time she's free on her schedule is during the summer." The subject of photography began on June 15, 2009 and was completed on August 18, 2009. Filming did not take place over the weekend.

On the first day of production, Cyrus and Hemsworth recorded kisses in the ocean. Other scenes that occurred in June included carnival and volleyball tournaments, both filmed on the beach near the Tybee Island dock. The shooting on the dock closed on June 23, 2009 after filming a scene where Kim dropped Ronnie and Jonah to stay with Steve. The church fire scene was shot on July 10, 2009. The shoot on the Georgia Tech Savannah campus begins on July 16. Kinnear finished recording on July 17, 2009. The main wedding scenes and driving scenes were filmed on Wormsloe Historic Site between July 20 and July 23 for twelve hours each day. The driving scene on the Isle of Hope, Georgia continues to 28. On July 30, the film has returned to Tybee Island for more beach scenes. Chaikin's character framed Cyrus' for stealing his watch on August 6th. On August 10, Hemsworth made an oil change and Cyrus searched for an upscale boutique in downtown Savannah for the movie. The funeral was filmed from August 11, 2009 until August 13, 2009 at the church on Tybee Island. On August 15th, further the church burning scene took place. The pack party was held at 16, and the cast and crew arrived in Atlanta, Georgia the next day to spend the last days filming at the Aquarium of Georgia. After analyzing the area on the 17th, the film began filming in public places at dawn on the 18th to avoid crowds. After the aquarium is opened to the public at 10:00, the shooting is diverted to the area behind the scenes.

Danser

Due to the conflicting personalities of his protagonist couple, Sparks faces difficulty in finding a vehicle that will draw Will and Ronnie to spend time together. "It should be during the summer, he [Ronnie] should be new in town, and whatever happens should start in June and end in August because you always want the conclusion," Sparks said of his requirements. He mentions summer camps or summer jobs as typical vehicles used in books, but think of them as unoriginal and boring. "So it must be original, it must be interesting, and at the same time it should be universal, that you feel it can happen to anyone." Sparks eventually chose to have Will and Ronnie bond over the nest of a loggerhead turtle, knowing that the Loggerhead eggs often hatch in August. The hatch nest scene occurred during the first week of August and involved 26 hawksbill hawksbillers. Shoots of turtles have a sense of congenitality to get to the seawater as soon as they are born, so hatch hatching scenes must be taken quickly. Said Mike Dodd of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, a biologist who oversaw the scene, the turtle boys "do what they know how to do: They crawl down into the water and swim." Sparks told an interviewer he suspects digital filmmakers will add more turtles to the scene. At the time of shooting, loggerhead turtles are listed as endangered species. An eco-friendly theme is an added bonus for Tybee Island, which then promotes ecotourism.

Soundtrack

"When I Look at You", a song by Miley Cyrus, came from his EP The Time of Our Lives released August 31, 2009, but is included on the soundtrack for matching the movie. This song is used in the background of movie trailers.

At the launch of Cradlesong's June 30, 2009 album, Rob Thomas told New York Daily News, "My friend Adam Shankman, who recently directed Miley's movie, called me on the phone tempo day and like, 'You have to write a song for this movie.'... I will definitely write a song for him [Cyrus]. "Ultimately, however, Thomas can not contribute music to The Last Song , citing" scheduling issues "as the reason.

The soundtrack featured the song by Casey McPherson, frontman of the Alpha Rev band, signed with Disney's Hollywood Records in August 2008. Anthony Anneandro magazine from various magazines notes that the use of the soundtrack as a "launch pad" for a new Disney artist is a common practice. A Different Side of Me by Allstar Weekend is also included on the soundtrack. They are a group who recently signed a contract with Hollywood Records after winning N.B.T. Competition through Disney Channel. The soundtrack was released in the US on March 23, 2010. Although not on the soundtrack, Snow Patrol 2006's "Shut Your Eyes" and Feist's "I Feel It All" also appeared in the movie. Soundtrack has greatly improved in sales in the DVD release week. The soundtrack peaked at # 104 on the Billboard album chart 200.

    Critical response

The Last Song was composed by critics. Review the aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, give this movie an average of 4/10 and a 20% rating based on 116 reviews. Critical consensus is summarized: "As a shameless manipulative like the production of Nicholas Sparks, The Last Song is not done by miscast and over matched star, Miley Cyrus." Metacritic, who ranked the film as normal, The Last Song holds a "generally unfavorable" score of 33% based on 27 reviews.

Reviewer is very critical of the Sparks and Van Wie scenarios and the formulated storyline. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle said his scenario error included some "unreasonable emotional scenes" and claimed, "The construction of the plot is weak, the incident does not flow one to the next." While reviewing Cyrus's performance, critics acknowledge his stage presence, but often criticize his acting skills. Jay Stone of Ottawa The Citizen says Cyrus's portrayal of angry Ronnie "consists of pouting and scorn... [...] Cyrus does not have much reach, but he does have a presence." Rob Nelson of Variety writes, "Cyrus, unfortunately, has not learned to not act [...] But he is showing off himself as a pianist and remains pretty fun all over." AO Scott of The New York Times believes that although "Hannah Montana's persona has a certain aggressive charm", in The Last Song he "acts [s] than explores motives and feelings of his character. "Roger Ebert gave 2.5/4 mixed films. He praised acting and directed, but scorned the plots and writings of Sparks.

Kinnear's appearance has been widely praised. A. O. Scott writes, "It is great to see Mr. Kinnear play a sympathetic character for a change [but] his ignorance and subtlety seem to be wasted in an unattractive project as well." Michael Phillips of The Chicago Tribune writes, "Very truthful and influential, [Kinnear] fought against a wave of maize in a manner similar to that of the Tibetan monks opposed to the tsunami at 2012 . "Glen Whipp of Associated Press wrote," Kinnear lends the film an unworthy honor ". Stone advised, "I will pay attention to Liam Hemsworth". Stephen Witty of The Star-Ledger praised Carly Chaikin's newcomer playing "bad girl" [...] with a fascinating mix of wildness and vulnerability.Am halfway, I began to look forward to death that Chaikin played a major role. "Reception for Coleman was mixed; Jeff Vice of "Deseret News" called it "hammy irritation" while Jon Bream of the Star Tribune wrote, "The most memorable acting is by Coleman, 12 [... who] got many outlines and gave they are full of confidence ". Despite the negative reviews of the criticism, the film was well received from fans and spectators with a fresh 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes and with an average of 7/10.
