Histori

Prior to European exploration, the northern part of the San Francisco Penninsula was populated by Ramaytush, the language subgroup of the Ohlone people. The village of Urebure in San Bruno Creek was visited by the expedition Gaspar de PortolÃÆ' in 1769; Long-term relics (5,000 years) and seasonal camps have been checked in Siplichiquin and Buckeye shell-bumps in San Bruno Mountain. Charcoal-sampling shows these sites may have been actively occupied at the beginning of the Spanish colonial period (late 1700s). The Colma Creek Delta was once an important habitat for waterfowls known to be hunted by Ramaytush in historic times, and archaeological sites have been recorded near the river. The City Plan also recognizes the remains of existing villages (CA-SMA-299) along the El Camino Real.

The area now south of San Francisco was originally part of Rancho Buri Buri, a large Mexican land grant for the Sanchez family dating to 1827. In 1853 Charles Lux and his business partner, Alfred Edmondson, bought 1,700 acres (7 km 2 ) from Rancho Buri Buri. Lux bought the Edmonson flower in 1856 and founded the city of Baden, now a neighborhood of South San Francisco. In 1855 Lux purchased 1,464 hectares (6 km 2 ) other than the land of Rancho Buri Buri and became a partner of fellow butchers and San Francisco businessman Henry Miller, forming the Miller & Lux.

The city of South San Francisco was originally built as an industrial estate and promoted by representatives of Beef Trust, a group including some of the country's largest meat packing companies. A city plan was proposed in 1888 by Gustavus Franklin Swift, founder of Swift & amp; Company meat packing company. The plan calls for several individual meat packing companies with shared storage areas, as well as residential areas for employees. Swift proposes the South San Francisco name based on South Chicago and South Omaha, where the Swift company already has a factory.

In 1890 Peter E. Iler of Omaha, Nebraska, the agent of the Beef Trust, purchased the Lux property, and in 1891 ownership was transferred to the South San Francisco Land and Improvement Company. The area is divided into industrial and residential areas, and companies install lighting, sewer connections, and water distribution in residential areas. A second company, eventually known as the Western Meat Company, set up yard and meat packaging facilities on 80 hectares (32 acres) of beachfront property; facility opened in 1892. Other industries soon moved, including pottery, two brick companies, paint manufacturer W.P. More complete & amp; Company, South Wood Company of San Francisco, and Jupiter Steel Pacific Company.

The city of San Francisco was established in 1908 following a dispute with San Mateo County, which has blocked the construction of a smelter at San Bruno Point supported by the locals. After the incorporation of additional industries moved into the city, including two steel mills. The new Town Hall opened on November 11, 1920.

In the 1920s the city was "the capital of the Peninsula's chimney." South San Francisco proudly calls itself "The Industrial City", a moto that was immortalized in 1923 by a large sign on the side of a hill overlooking the city. The industry remained the main economic focus of the city through the 1950s. During the depression, the city maintained 35 industrial operations, including four meatpacking businesses, six iron or steel factories, a smelter for precious metals, seven equipment manufacturers of various types, two large paint manufacturers, three other chemical works, and three food packaging companies. During World War II shipbuilding also became a significant operation. From August 1940, until the end of the War, a total of 48 vessels were built and launched in West Pipe & amp; Steel Ship.

At the end of the war, the focus of the city shifted away from the "chimney industry" to light industry, warehousing and housing development. Big manufacturers are closed, and new developments are focused on office parks, housing, high-rise hotels, and yacht harbors. Genentech biotech giant opened in 1976, leading to the new identity of South San Francisco as the "birthplace of biotechnology". The population grew to 63,632 at the 2010 census.

Places of interest and recreation

Sign In Hill

South San Francisco is not known as a tourist destination, but it is a key landmark that can be seen by anyone traveling along the San Francisco Peninsula or via nearby San Francisco International Airport. Sign Hill, near San Bruno Mountain State Park, features large letters on the side of the mountain that read "SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY." The letters are made of painted concrete and watered along the side of the hill (unlike the steel letters in Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles). The sign was installed in the 1920s, and in 1996 was given a place on the National Register of Historic Places as a remarkable example of the early twentieth-century "civil boosterism", an appreciation of the importance of the past heavy industry to the regional economy. , and recognizes the significant contributions the region made during World War I and II.

Sign Hill is now a city park that provides pedestrians with access to letters; The park covers 30 hectares (12 acres) of open space and almost 2 miles (3.2 km) of hiking trails. At the top of Sign Hill, a tall pole with electric lights serves as an electric Christmas tree, which is usually turned on from the day after Thanksgiving until January 6th. This "tree" is seen for miles at night. In 2008, the pole was modified to hold the 100 vertical number, celebrating the 100th anniversary of South San Francisco as an incorporated city. For Anniversary, Independence Day & amp; Veterans Day, the poles fly the American flag. The airport weather station is located next to the flagpole.

Wind Harp

Originally called Cabot, Cabot, and Forbes Tower when it was built in 1967 as the center of their industrial park ( 37.654 Â ° N 122.385 Â ° W / 37.654; -122.385 ( Wind Harp ) ), this 92-foot tall statue by Lucia and Aristides Demetrios is one of the largest harem aeolian in the world. Named for Aeolus, the Greek god of the wind, and created by the 17th century polymath Athanasius Kircher, the aeolian lute is a passive instrument played by the movement of the wind. Made from steel produced at Bethlehem Steel. It's designed to "take advantage of the movements of the viewer... constantly changing, bringing a series of elegant ellipses and shifting patterns of light."

City Hall

City Hall is located at 400 Grand Avenue ( 37.656Ã, Â ° N 122.413Ã, Â ° W / 37.656; -122.413 ( South San Francisco Town Hall ) ). City purchased the Cubic Center website in 1913 for $ 10,000 from the South San Francisco Land and Improvement Company. This property has been tagged for nineteen major home sites. The design of City Hall was modeled after the Georgian Georgian neo-colonial Philadelphia design. City Mayor's Office, City Manager Office, City Officer, Economy and Community Development, Finance and Human Resources are located at City Hall.

Other parks

South San Francisco has a number of other parks: Orange Memorial Park ( 37.653Ã, Â ° N 122.427 Â ° W / 37.653; -122.427 ( Orange Memorial Park ) ) offers a baseball/softball field, soccer field, indoor swimming pool, picnic area, sculpture garden, children's playground, tennis court, basketball court, bocce ball and newly created skate park. It hosts the farmers market Saturday (May-October), as well as the annual "Concert in the Park" in September. Alta Loma Park, Buri-Buri Park, Monte Verde Park, Paradise Valley, Sellick Park ( 37.643 Â ° N 122,450 Â ° W / 37.643; -122.450 ( Sellick Park ) ), and Westborough Park all include sports and picnic facilities, and the Terrabay Recreation Center has an excellent gym. SSF Unified School District facilities are also available for sports, and Boys and Girls Club in Northern San Mateo County is headquartered adjacent to Orange and Centennial Parks.

The city also has parks and marinas along the San Francisco Bay coast, named Oyster Point, which is also home to the private Oyster Point Yacht Club. The Class I cycling and pedestrian path is a 10 "wide with 2 'decked granite asphalt landing, irrigated for low maintenance landscaping, with safety lighting, a signaled intersection where the line crosses Spruce and Chestnut Avenues, and lights flicker on the ground on Orange Avenue Also, a dog park is located adjacent to Orange Park along the path. This new center is called Centennial Way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the City in 2008.

Airport Blvd.

Airport Blvd. is home to several airport hotels such as Four Points and Best Western, as well as the South San Francisco Conference Center (( 37.647Ã , Â ° N 122.404Ã, Â ° W / 37.647; -122.404 ( SSF Conference Center ) )). Within 2 miles from the airport, many visitors come to stay during transit or while attending a service. Although some dining options such as Denny's and IHOP are within walking distance of the hotel, but the city view here is very gloomy, with no trees or other decoration to the street. Lack of crossings and bad elements of complete streets, making it very unfriendly for pedestrians (most visitors do not come by car and thus difficult to get from the hotel to nearby facilities).

The downtown area along Grand Avenue has buildings from the early days of the city. Galli's Sanitary Bakery operates from 1909 to close in October 2016, while - a few blocks down - 1905 obesire-Schwartz homes ( 37.6565Ã, Â ° N 122.4169Ã, Â ° W / 37.6565; -122.4169 ( Plymire-Schwartz House ) ) is the first hospital on the North Peninsula; now operated by the Historical Society. The 1920 town hall was modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia, while next to it sat the original 1916 Carnegie Library. The 1912 Metropolitan Hotel (built by the Meat Packers Consortium) now has a mural depicting the history of SSF high on its east wall. Bertolucci is an Italian restaurant that also has been there almost since the birth of the city, located near downtown San Francisco and easily viewed from highway 101.

Every Vacation season Parkway Estates residents (three-lane development built in the mid-1980s on Chestnut Avenue) decorate their homes and yard with Christmas lights. This display is open to the public, is a famous holiday attraction, and hundreds of visitors arrive every holiday season. Lilac Lane (off of Palm Avenue) was a previous seasonal decorative co-operative that began in the 1960s, at one point it was the destination of the city Santa Claus parade, and the place where the local Commerce Chamber distributed toys from R. Dakin (previously headquartered in SSF) to hundreds of children. Only a few native survivors and current decorative technology have gone far beyond the '60s so that, by the 21st century, Lilac Lane has become a remote area.
