Plot

Miles Raymond is an unsuccessful writer, a wine lover, and a middle-aged half-alcoholic alcohol teacher living in San Diego. He picked up Jack Cole, his soon-to-be-married actor and college roommate, on his way through the wine country of Santa Ynez Valley. Although Cole is still acknowledged on occasion, his acting career seems to have peaked a few years earlier, when he played a role in the popular TV soap. He is now doing commercial broadcasting and is planning to enter his successful future father-in-law estate business. Miles wants to spend a week relaxing, playing golf, and enjoying good food and wine. However, many of Miles's concerns, Jack is pacing and wanting to have the last sexual relationship before settling in a home life.

In wine country, the couple visit Miles's favorite restaurant, The Hitching Post II, and meet Maya, a waiter who is familiar with Miles. Jack senses that Maya is attracted to Miles, who believes he is married. Jack lies to Maya that the manuscript of Miles has been accepted for publication, though that is only being considered. At a local wine tasting, Jack and Miles meet a wine washer named Stephanie, who also knows Maya. Jack was immediately attracted to Stephanie and arranged a double date, after finding Maya no longer married.

During a date, Miles gets drunk and calls Vicki, his ex-wife, after learning from Jack that he's married again. The two couples went to Stephanie's house, where she and Jack immediately went to her bedroom to have sex. Miles and Maya are connected through their mutual interest in wine. Maya says she is finishing a master's degree in horticulture so she can get out of being a waitress. They went separately, but not before Miles gave him a copy of the manuscript.

Jack's affair with Stephanie continues, to the point where she believes she is in love; he bonds with his daughter and advises Miles that they move there to get him closer to Stephanie. He wants to cancel his marriage. After spending a day together, Miles and Maya return to her apartment and have sex. The next morning, Miles let him slip that Jack is getting married. Disgusted by the man's dishonesty, Maya dumps Miles and tells Stephanie, who, upset and crushed because she's used to it, breaks Jack's nose.

When he learned that his manuscript had been rejected, Miles drank much in the vineyard. When the server cut him off, he ended up drinking from the spit bucket in the tasting room, creating a fuss. That night, Jack was in contact with another waiter named Cammi, who recognized him from his acting career. A few hours later, Jack shows up at the motel - naked and confesses that Cammi's husband came home when he and Jack were having sex. Jack was forced to flee without his clothes and wallet (which contained a pair of irreplaceable wedding rings). He convinces Miles to sneak into the house, where he finds Cammi and her husband having sex. Miles grabbed the wallet and ran, almost breaking away from Cammi's angry husband, who chased him naked.

To explain his broken nose to his fiancée, Jack runs a Miles Saab 900 that can be turned into a tree, giving the impression that they had an accident. The couple returns to the fiance's house, where Jack is greeted with open arms. While Miles went with his battered car.

After the wedding ceremony, Miles meets his ex-wife Vicki and meets her new husband. Learning that she was pregnant, Miles reached the lowest point. Alone, he drank his precious wine, in 1961 ChÃÆ' Â ¢ teau Cheval Blanc , from a disposable styrofoam soda cup at a fast-food restaurant. Time passed when Miles returned to his school teaching routine. One day he received a voicemail from Maya, who said he enjoyed his manuscript and invited him to visit. Miles was seen driving back to the wine country and knocking on Maya's door.

Impact on the wine industry

The film drew attention and boosted tourism to the growing region of the Santa Ynez Valley in Central Coast California. Throughout the film, Miles speaks fondly of the red wine varieties of Pinot Noir while demeaning Merlot. Following the release of US films in October 2004, Merlot sales fell 2% while Pinot Noir sales increased 16% in the Western United States. A similar trend occurs in British wine outlets.

A 2009 study by Sonoma State University found that Sideways slowed Merlot's sales volume growth and caused the price to fall, but the film's main effect on the wine industry was the increase in Pinot Noir's sales volume and price and overall wine consumption.

A 2014 study by Vineyard Financial Associates estimates that Sideways' cost of Merlot farmers is more than $ 400 million in lost revenues in the decade after its release, but the research, by its own, speculative acknowledgment.

Soundtrack

The original soundtrack album featured 15 jazz instruments created and produced by Rolfe Kent and arranged and arranged for the band by Tony Blondal. The album was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for "Best Original Score", and his music proved so popular that there was a demand for a nationwide tour. Eventually some cities were chosen to appear as composers too busy to commit more. The romantic leitmotif together by Miles and Maya is a quote from Symbiosis by Claus Ogerman and Bill Evans.

Reception

In a review of Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned 96% approval ratings based on 223 reviews, with an average rating of 8.8/10. The site's important consensus reads, "Interesting, thoughtful, and often funny, Sideways is a truly mature road trip comedy, full of great performances. " At Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 94 out of 100, based on 42 critics, signifying a "universal recognition".

Time Out describes the film as "smart, funny and moving", and Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave a four-star movie, saying: "what happened for seven days adding up to the best human comedy of the year - comedy, because it's funny, and human, as it surprisingly moves. "A surprising surprise, Sideways became popular in Hollywood, US, and internationally. Santa Ynez Valley, where many of these films are organized, have increased tourism. The film was nominated for dozens of awards, won many, and was dubbed the "best movie of 2004".

With the exception of Giamatti, who has starred in critically acclaimed films like American Splendor , this film is a career breakthrough for the stars. Church and Madsen were each nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Golden Globe Award, and the Academy Award for their performance, winning the Broadcasting Film Critics Association Award and the Independent Spirit Award for their respective categories. Giamatti has since been called the "Best Character Actors of the World" by Time magazine. Sandra Oh - who later broke up with film director, Alexander Payne - went on to star in ABC's drama Gray's Anatomy, which she won two Screen Actors Guild Awards and one Golden Globe Award.

Sideways was ranked 494 on the 2008 Empire ' list of the greatest 500 movies of all time. In 2013, Writer Guild of America also placed the script as the 90th largest ever written.

Possible sequel

Pickett wrote the sequel to his novel Vertical in 2011, following Miles and Jack on a road trip to Oregon with Miles's mother. However, Payne has refused to consider the sequel to the film. Fox Searchlight has the right to character, but Payne's lack of interest makes this film a non-starter for Fox.
