Roman Holiday is a 1953 American romantic comedy film directed and produced by William Wyler. It stars Gregory Peck as a reporter and Audrey Hepburn as the royal princess comes out to see Rome himself. Hepburn won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance; Scenario and costume design also won.

It was written by John Dighton and Dalton Trumbo, although with Trumbo on Hollywood's blacklist, he did not receive credit; instead, Ian McLellan Hunter approached him. Trumbo credit was restored when the film was released on DVD in 2003. On December 19, 2011, full credit for the work of Trumbo was restored. Director of Blacklisted Bernard Vorhaus worked on the film as an assistant director under a pseudonym.

It was shot at the Cinecittà studio studios and in locations around Rome during the "Hollywood on Tiber" era. The film is screened at the 14th Venice film festival in the official program.

In 1999, Roman Holiday was selected for conservation at the United States National Film Register by the Library of Congress as "significant cultural, historical, or aesthetic".

Plot

Ann (Audrey Hepburn), a crown princess on a state visit to Rome, became frustrated with her tightly scheduled life and quietly left her country's embassy. The delayed effects of sedatives make him fall asleep on the bench, where Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), a foreign journalist for "American News Service", finds it without knowing who he is. Thinking he was drunk, Joe let him spend the night in his apartment.

The next morning, Joe was rushed late to work and gave his editor, Mr. Hennessy (Hartley Power), false details of his press conference with the princess. When Hennessy informed him that the show had been canceled and showed him a news story about his "sudden illness", he realized who exactly was in his apartment. Seeing opportunities, Joe proposes to get an exclusive interview with the princess and Hennessy agrees.

Joe rushes home and, hiding the fact that he is a reporter, offers to show his guest "Anya" around Rome. He also calls his friend photographer, Irving Radovich (Eddie Albert), to participate and secretly take pictures. However, Ann declines Joe's offer and leaves. Enjoying his freedom, he explores the outdoor market. Joe followed and 'accidentally' met him in the Spanish Stairs. This time he convinces him to spend the day with him and take him to a street cafe, where he meets Irving. Then, as he tries to drive the Vespa he's carrying for the ride, they are caught and gone away when he and Irving show their press bait.

That night, at a ball dance on the boat, the government agents were called by Ann's embassy line and tried to force her away. Ann takes part in a broken battle, where Joe gets ambushed and falls into the river and Ann jumps in to save her. After they swam and the police caught the agents, they shared a kiss as they sat shivering by the river. Later, knowing his kingdom's responsibility had to be continued, Ann said good-bye to Joe and returned to the embassy.

Meanwhile, Hennessy has suspected that the princess is not ill as claimed and tries to get Joe to admit what she knows about it. Joe, however, has decided not to write his story, although he later tells Irving that he is free to sell his photographs. They then went for a delayed press conference at the embassy, surprising Princess Ann.

At the end of the interview, the princess abruptly asks to meet the reporters, shake hands and talk briefly to each one. When he reaches Joe and Irving, the latter presents him with an envelope containing the photographs he took. After the interview ended, Joe walked away alone.

Cast

Wyler first offered the role to Hollywood's favorite Cary Grant. Grant refused, believing that he was too old to play Hepburn's love interest (though he played opposite him ten years later at Charade.) Another source said Grant refused because he knew all the attention would be centered around the princess. The Peck contract gave him a solo billing star, with newcomers Hepburn registered much more clearly in the credits. In the middle of filming, Peck suggested to Wyler that he picked her up to the same billing - a move that was almost unheard of in Hollywood.

Wyler initially considered Elizabeth Taylor and Jean Simmons for this role, but both were unavailable. Wyler is very excited to find Hepburn, but he does not pick it until after the screen test. Wyler can not stay and film it himself, but tells the assistant director to ask the cameraman and healthy man to continue recording after the assistant director says "cut" so he will look relaxed after doing a dignified, quiet scene from the movie. Honest recording â € <â € was not Hepburn's first acting performance (he had appeared in Dutch and British films from 1948 and on stage, including the title role in the Broadway adaptation of Gigi ) but it is his first major film role and first appearance in American film. Wyler wants a different "anti-Italian" Italian actress who curves maggiorate like Gina Lollobrigida, and says that "She's perfect.... her new star has no buttocks, no breasts, no clothes tight, no high heels, in short a Martian. He will be a sensation.
