Raffles Hotel is a colonial-style luxury hotel in Singapore. It was founded by the Armenian hotelier, Sarkies Brothers, in 1887. The hotel is named after British statesman Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore. This is the flagship property of Raffles Hotels & amp; Resorts, a subsidiary of Fairmont Raffles Hotels International owned by France's multi-national hotel group AccorHotels. Raffles Singapore has started on Phase 3 of the three phase recovery program on December 13, 2017. The hotel is now completely closed with a reopening plan in the second half of 2018. The original Singapore Sling experience is now presented in the long Pop-up Bar located at 3 Seah Street , next to the Raffles Gift Shop that stays open during recovery.

Histori

Raffles Hotel Singapore started as a privately owned beach house built in the early 1830s. It first became Emerson's Hotel when Dr. Charles Emerson rented the building in 1878. After his death in 1883, the hotel was closed, and the Raffles Institution stepped in to use the building as a boarding house until Dr. Rent Emerson ended in September 1887.

Almost as soon as the first lease ended, Sarkies Brothers rented the property with the intention of turning it into an upscale hotel. Only a few months later, on December 1, 1887, ten rooms Raffles Hotel opened. Its proximity to the beach, and its reputation for high standards in service and accommodation make this hotel popular with wealthy customers.

In the first decade of the hotel, three new buildings were added to the original beach house. First, a pair of two-story wings were completed in 1890, each containing 22 guest suites. Soon after, Sarkies Brothers rented a neighboring building on No. Beach Road. 3, merenovasinya, and in 1894, the Palm Court Wing was completed. The new addition brings the total of hotel guest rooms to 75.

A few years later, the new main building was built on the location of the original beach house. Designed by Regent Alfred John Bidwell architect from Swan and Maclaren, the building was completed in 1899. The new main building offers many advanced features (for time), including ceiling fans and electric lights. In fact, Raffles Hotel is the region's first hotel that has electric lights.

The hotel continues to grow over the years with the addition of wings, verandas, ballrooms, bars, billiards room, as well as buildings and other rooms. The Great Depression posed a problem for Raffles Hotel and, in 1931, Sarkies Brothers declared bankruptcy. In 1933, financial problems were solved, and a public company called Raffles Hotel Ltd. established.

After the start of the Japanese occupation in Singapore on February 15, 1942, it was said that the Japanese soldiers met guests at Raffles Hotel and danced one last waltz. Meanwhile, the staff dunked the hotel silver - including a silver beef trolley - at the Palm Court. During World War II, Raffles Hotel was named Syonan Ryokan ( ???? , sh ? nan ryokan ), incorporating Syonan ("Light of the South"), Japanese name to occupy Singapore, and , the name for a traditional Japanese inn. In 1987, a century after it first opened, Hotel Raffles was declared a National Monument by the Singapore government.

In 1989, the hotel was closed for an extensive renovation that lasted two years, and cost $ 160 million. The hotel reopened on September 16, 1991. While the hotel was restored to its majestic style in 1915, significant changes have been made. All guest rooms are converted into suites. In addition, Long Bar, which is a celebrity favorite spot like Somerset Maugham, was moved from the lobby to a shopping arcade side by side. Long Bar is also a national cocktail place, Singapore Sling was created by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon.

On July 18, 2005, it was announced that Colony Capital LLC would buy Raffles Holdings for $ 1.45 billion.

In April 2010, it was reported that Qatar's sovereign wealth fund bought Raffles Hotel for $ 275 million. In addition to taking over Raffles Hotel, the Qatar Investment Authority will inject $ 467 million into Fairmont Raffles Hotels International in exchange for a 40% stake in luxury hotel chains.

At one time, Raffles Hotel maintained a hotel museum. It displays memorabilia such as photos, silver and items from china, postcards, and menus, as well as rare and old editions of the works of famous writers who live there. The museum also displays photographs of famous guests and visitors. The Raffles Hotel Museum is closed in 2012. In December 2015, the Fairmont/Raffles brand was purchased by French multinational hotel group AccorHotels.
