Histori

It was first completed in 1849, during the California Gold Rush, as Nevada (Spanish for "snow-covered", references to snow-capped mountains in the area). The Gold Tunnel on the north side of Deer Creek is the city's first mine, located in 1850. The first mill built in Nevada City was in Deer Creek, just above the city, in August, 1850, and built by Lewis & amp; Child, with water wheel. In 1850-51, it was the most important mining town in the state, Nevada County being the country's leading gold mining area. In 1851, The Nevada Journal became the first newspaper published in towns and counties. The city of Nevada was founded on April 19, 1856. In 1864, the word "City" was added to the name to assuage confusion with the nearby state of Nevada, and the city has officially been known as the "City of Nevada" ever since. The former town of Coyoteville, California, later became the northwestern part of Nevada City.
