Pacific Grove is a coastal city in Monterey County, California in the United States. The US Census Bureau estimates the population of 2013 at 15.504. Pacific Grove is located between Point Pinos and Monterey.
Pacific Grove is known for its Victorian-style houses, Asilomar State Beach, and is also known as the "US Butterfly City." for the annual migration of the king's butterfly. The city has more historic homes per capita than elsewhere in California. Seventy-five percent of homes in Pacific Grove are considered historic. Some of them have turned into bed and breakfast inns.
The city is also known as the Point Pinos Lighthouse location, the oldest lighthouse that operates continuously on the West Coast. In prehistoric times, Rumsen was one of the linguistically distinct Ohlone groups in the Monterey Bay Area that inhabits the area now known as Pacific Grove. Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 when the Pacific Land Improvement Company, owned by David Jacks, donated the area to the first Chautauqua West Coast retreat formed by a group of Methodists who imitated the city after Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Later, butterflies, fragrant pine, and fresh sea air bring others to the Pacific Grove Retreat to rest and meditate. Pacific Grove contains several habitat types including marine, coastal, pine forest and mixed oak forest.
