According to censos 2010, the main languages ââspoken in Belize include English, Spanish, and Criol, all of which are spoken by over 40% of the population. The Mayan language is also spoken in certain areas.
English is the official language and primary language of public education, although pronounced naturally by a small number of people as a first language. Spanish is taught in primary and secondary schools as well. Bilingualism is very common. Literacy currently reaches almost 80%.

English is the primary language in the first and most densely populated district of Belize. Spanish is the most widely used language in the border districts of Cayo, Orange Walk, and Corozal. Creole is the main language in the Stann Creek district, and the Mayan language dominates in the southernmost district of Toledo.

English Standard and Belizean Creole
English is the official language of Belize, a former British colony. This is the main language of public education, government, and most of the media. The majority of Belizeans, regardless of ethnicity, speak an English-based creole language called Belizean Creole (also referred to as Criol ) during informal, social and interethnic dialogues.
When Creole is beside its lexification language, as in Belize, a continuum between Creole and lexifier languages. This is known as code redirection. It is therefore difficult to prove or differentiate the number of Creole speakers compared to English speakers. Belizean Creole may be described as the lingua franca of the nation.
Spanish
About 50% of Belizes identify themselves as Mestizo , Latin or Hispanic . Spanish is spoken as an original language by about 30% of the population, and is taught in schools to children who do not have it as their first language. The "Spanish Kitchen" is a transitional form of Spanish mixed with Belizean Creole, and is spoken in northern cities like Corozal and San Pedro.
Over half the population is bilingual, and the big segment is multilingual. Being a small and multiethnic country surrounded by Spanish-speaking countries, multilingualism is highly recommended in the community.

Belize is also home to three Maya languages: Q'eqchi ', the indigenous language of the indigenous Belize tribe threatened by Mopan, and Yucatec Maya. Around 16,100 people speak Arajakan-based Garifuna languages, and 6,900 Mennonites in Belize speak mainly Plautdietsch while a small part of Mennonites speak with Pennsylvania Germany.
