Jamestown is a town in Newport County, Rhode Island in the United States. The population is 5,405 at the 2010 census. Jamestown is located almost entirely on Conanicut Island, the second largest island in Narragansett Bay. It also includes the uninhabited Dutch Island and Gould Island. Jamestown is ranked 444th richest place to live in the United States in 2016, with an average home selling price of $ 1,229,039.

Geography

According to the US Census Bureau, the city has an area of â€‹â€‹35.3 square miles (91 km ²), which is 9.7 square miles (25 km ²)) and 25 , 6 square miles (66 km ²) is water. The total area is 72.55% water.

Rhode Island Route 138 is the only state highway in Jamestown, connecting towns and islands to North Kingstown to the west (via Jamestown Bridge Verrazzano) and Newport to the east (above Newport Bridge).

History

In 1524, Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew visited Narragansett Bay. The Dutch island was used by feather merchants in 1636 or 1637, and the British invaders made arrangements to use Conanicut Island to shepherd the sheep in 1638.

The ferry operated between Conanicut and Newport Island in 1675. In 1678, Conanicut Island was founded as a city of Jamestown, when there were about 150 inhabitants. Named for James, Duke of York, who became King James II in 1685.

In 1710, many of the streets on Conanicut Island were in place. In 1728, the town of Jamestown built a windmill for grinding corn, which uses sea breeze to gain power because no water source flows to change the waterwheel.

American Revolution

Two hundred British and Hessian troops landed at East Ferry on Conanicut Island on December 10, 1775; they then march into the West Ferry where they burned the ferry home. When they returned to East Ferry, they destroyed many buildings, including 14 homes, which led to more than 200 of the 556 inhabitants of Conanicut Island fleeing the land.

In December 1776, the British fleet arrived at Narragansett Bay and occupied Newport. The British took over the battery of colonial militia at Fort Dumpling (now part of Fort Wetherill) and Conanicut Battery in Beavertail, just south of Fort Getty at the end of Battery Lane. They left Narragansett Bay in October 1779; when they left, they destroyed the fortresses they had occupied and burned the Beavertail Lighthouse.

18th and 19th centuries

Beavertail Light resumed operations in 1784, and Jamestown rebuilt Jamestown Windmill and Quaker Meetinghouse in 1787 which had been destroyed during the occupation.

In 1800, Fort Dumpling was erected at the site of previous fortresses facing East Passage. A high stone tower on the highest cliff can carry eight weapons.

The town of Jamestown commissioned a steam-powered ferry in 1872 and started service between Jamestown and Newport in May 1873. The availability of reliable and convenient ferry services to and from Newport had a significant impact on Conanicut Island farming, and Jamestown became a destination for both day trips and summer vacation.

The 1880s and 1890s experienced a construction boom, with hotels, private summer homes, and city buildings going up. The island's population tripled between 1870 and 1900.

the 20th century to the present

There was an explosion of military fortification activity from 1890 to the end of World War I. The Spanish-American War was a catalyst, beginning in 1898, and work began at Fort Greble, Dutch Island. The War Department bought 31 acres (130,000 m ²) for Fort Getty, and the castle was quickly erected. The summer house was cursed near Fort Dumpling to set up Fort Wetherill. More land was acquired at Prospect Hill near the Conanicut Battery site for fire observation and control stations, and the government set up torpedo stations and test facilities on Gould Island. Then, at the end of the First World War, the fortresses of Conanicut Island were not used anymore. World War II brought the formation or reactivation of military bases around Narragansett Bay, including Forts Getty, Burnside, and Wetherill on Conanicut Island, Fort Greble on the Island of Holland, torpedo factory on Kambing Island, and torpedo station on Gould Island.

Jamestown was a busy summer destination in the early 1900s, and had nine hotels in 1903. The golden age of the large resort hotels was brief, however, in Jamestown and elsewhere, and patronage rapidly declined in the 1920s. The Thorndike Hotel was demolished in 1938. The Gardner House is one of the larger hotels, but it was demoted in 1941 after several years of unemployment, and a USO building was built on its site. After the war, the city bought the building and is now known as the community center. It was extensively beautiful and renovated in 2002. The Bay View Hotel closed in the 1960s, the last of a very large hotel. The building was demolished in 1985, and the Bay View Condominium was opened for occupancy four years later. The exterior of the building is designed to resemble the hotel. The Bay Voyage Hotel is the only survivor of many hotels that once lined the eastern port of Jamestown, now operating as a time share resort.

In 1938, a major storm caused much property damage and lost more than 300 lives in the Narragansett Bay area. It sweeps most of the sand from Mackerel Cove beach, destroys the popular beach pavilion, and destroys the West Ferry pier - which actually speeds up approval for a bridge to Saunderstown. The first Jamestown Bridge opened in the summer of 1940, replacing the West Ferry service with continued connections to the west.

In 1969, the Newport Pell Claiborne Bridge was completed, building Route 138 as a continuous highway from South County to Newport. By completion, traditional ferry services are eliminated. This bridge is depicted on the anniversary of Rhode Island. In 1992, the Jamestown-Verrazano Bridge replaced a narrow steel bridge established in 1940. Followed by the construction of new access roads on the western end and the cross-Conanicut Island highway.

Demographics

In the 2000 census, there were 5,622 people, 2,359 households, and 1,625 families living in the city. Population density is 580.0 people per square mile (224.0/kmÃ‚Â²). There are 2,769 housing units with an average density of 285.7 per square mile (110.3/kmÂ²). City's racial makeup is 97.55% White, 0.78% African American, 0.21% Native Americans, 0.39% Asia, 0.00% Pacific Islands, 0.23% of other races, and 0.84% % of two or more races. 0.89% of Hispanic or Latino populations of any race.

There were 2,359 households where 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had non-husbands female households, and 31.1% is not family. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the city, the population is spread by 22.0% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 33.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% years or more. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 women, there are 94.6 men, and for every 100 women aged 18 and over, there are 91.6 males.

The average income for households in the city is $ 87,073, and the average income for families is $ 117,990. Men have an average income of $ 50,185 versus $ 35,056 for women. The per capita income for the city is $ 58,664. 2.9% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. 1.4% of those under the age of 18 and 3.1% of those 65 and above live below the poverty line.

Jamestown Public Schools includes two buildings: Melrose School for elementary school students and Lawn School for high school students. For senior high school students, public schools are accepted at North Kingstown High School or Narragansett.
