- June 25 - Waylon Jennings successful, "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to Basics of Love)" spent his sixth week at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart. This is only the third (and last, last) six weeks. 1 song of the 1970s, and will be the last song to spend time on the charts for 20 years (until 1997 "It's Your Love" by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill).
- June 26 - Elvis Presley performs his last concert at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana.
- August 20 - Elvis Presley's funeral was broadcast on television on ABC, CBS and NBC (The West Coast & The Marianas and American Samoa chose to display Prerecord), ahead of Saturday's Children's Program.
- December 31 - Dolly Parton's "Here You Come Again" spent the fifth week at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart. This will be the last song that spent time on chart tops until the 1990s "Love Without End, Amen" by George Strait.
