History

Spencer was born to a prominent Cornish family of Philadelphia, Richard Alexandria Fullerton and Sarah Hanna Penrose, and brother politician Boies Penrose, businessman Richard Pen R.A. Penrose and gynecologist Charles Bingham Penrose. In 1886, he graduated last in his class from Harvard. Penrose began as a woman and an adventurer who became a successful entrepreneur in a gold field near Cripple Creek in the 1890s as manager of the local real estate office Charles L. Julie Penrose (wife)

Julia Villiers Lewis was born August 12, 1870 in Detroit, Michigan, his father, Alexander Lewis, was a prominent businessman and served as Mayor of Detroit in 1876 and 1877.

Julie married James "Jim" Howard McMillan, son of US Senator and owner of Michigan Car Company James McMillan (1838-1902) on 18 June 1890. Julie and Jim have two children, Gladys (1892) and James II (1894). Julie and Jim, who are considered wealthy, move to Colorado in the hope that the climate will cure tuberculosis. James II died of appendicitis on 3 April 1902, and her husband died of tuberculosis on May 9, 1902, leaving Julie a widow.

Spencer Penrose and Julie were married in London on April 28, 1906. She is a fan of performing arts and visual arts, and the original founder of Central City Opera (1932) and Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.

The El Pomar Foundation

The El Pomar Foundation was founded in 1937 by Spencer and Julie Penrose to enhance, encourage, and promote the present and future prosperity of the Colorado community through grant-making and community management. The name of the Foundation "El Pomar" is the ancient Spanish for "The Orchard", originated from Penrose's house located in the apple orchard.

Based in Colorado Springs, the El Pomar Foundation is one of the largest and oldest private foundations in Rocky Mountain West, with assets of $ 500 million. El Pomar contributes over $ 20 million annually through community grants and stewardship programs to support Colorado non-profit organizations involved in health, humanitarian services, education, arts and humanities, and community and community initiatives.

Penrose Heritage Museum

Penrose Heritage Museum is a 8,500 square foot (790 m 2 ) museum located at 11 Lake Circle, adjacent to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. The Museum's extensive collection contains 31 horse-drawn carriages and 13 motor vehicles, including Mrs. Cadillac's limo. Death, Funeral and Inheritance

Spencer died on 7 December 1939 at the age of seventy-four. Spencer (1865-1939) and Julie Penrose (1870-1956) were buried at Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun in Cheyenne Mountain, overlooking the Broadmoor resort.

Spencer's heritage of community, business, and philanthropic leaders can be appreciated in the famous landmarks he built around Colorado Springs, such as the Broadmoor Hotel and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, as well as through ongoing charitable efforts from the El Pomar Foundation across the State of Colorado.
