The main landmark of Fountain Square is the Mercury Fountain, designed by Saint Clair Cemin. Right in front of the Mercury Fountain is Market Street, and across the street is the Pavilion. The pavilion serves as an open air rink during the winter and as a concert venue and event for the rest of the year. Adjacent to the fountain is One & amp; Two Fountain Square buildings with One & amp; Two buildings of Freedom Square are located one block to the west. The center is surrounded by street parking and some parking garages. Reston Town Center's "downtown" area has over 50 retail stores and 30 restaurants. In addition, Reston Town Center features a recently renovated 13-screen cinema, and Hyatt Regency hotel. Since the last phase of construction in 2009, Reston City Center, in the past known for more shopping, dining, and entertainment, has also evolved into a location for business and residence. Northern Virginia Magazine readers chose Reston Town Center for the top ten list of 2008 "Hip to be Where", and it was dubbed the "city center for the 21st century."

History

Reston City Center was conceived and planned to begin in the late 1970s by Land Land Development for approximately 460 hectares of undeveloped land near Dulles International Airport. The construction of the city center began in 1988, more than 20 years after the founding of Reston in 1964 by Robert E. Simon.

Phase 1 development starts from the center with two 11-storey office buildings, One Fountain Square and Two Fountain Square, along with smaller office/retail buildings and Hyatt Regency hotels. This phase opened in October 1990 and consists of an area located between Reston Parkway and Library Street. Phase 2 consists of One Freedom Square with 18 and 16 floors of Two Freedom Square (both built in 2000). The rest of Phase 2 will remain undeveloped until three South Market buildings and a nine-level parking garage built and opened in 2009 by Boston Properties. One, Two and Three South Market buildings are 10, 6, and 10 stories, respectively. Immediately after the opening of the garage, an additional 8-storey office building, the Democracy Tower, was built on and now serves as an office for the College Board. Phase 2 is located between the Library Road and the Explorers Road. Phase 3 is home to three high-rise housing (completed in mid-2006), Reston Town Square Park, and The Avant apartment building (currently under construction). Phase 3 is located between Explorer Street and Town Center Parkway.
