Red Lion Hotels is a full-service, mid-size hotel brand owned by Red Lion Hotels Corporation.

Red Lion competes in the lodging industry segment with moderate price and full service, along with Holiday Inn, Ramada, and Quality Inn. Complementary brand, Red Lion Inn & amp; The suites compete in the moderately priced service limited segment of the lodging industry, along with Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn, and Hampton Inn. They have 53 hotels in their systems with 12,344 total rooms, and 712,687 square meters of meeting space.

History

Business partners Tod McClaskey and Ed Pietz bought 89-room Thunderbird Motor Inn in Portland, Oregon in 1959, the first property in place that was originally called Thunderbird-Red Lion Inns. In 1984 McClaskey and Pietz sold chains - which, at the time, had 57 properties - to Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & amp; Co to report $ 600 million.

Brand ownership has changed several times throughout its history. In 1996, the chain was acquired by Doubletree who changed most properties as Doubletree Hotels. By the time Doubletree joined the Promus Hotel Corporation in 1999, only 19 hotels retained the name of the Red Lion.

Red Lion Hotels were sold to WestCoast Hospitality by Hilton - who previously acquired Promus - in 2001. At the time of sale, the chain has returned to 42 hotels, 22 of which are franchises.

Looking to revitalize some of the properties of aging, in 2004 the company announced plans to sell 11 hotel-owned companies to fund a $ 40 million "project rejuvenation" for the rest of the chain. The following year WestCoast Hospitality changed its name to Red Lion Hotels Corporation, part of an effort to emphasize a new focus on the Red Lion brand.

Operation

Red Lion Hotel is currently located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia. This includes about 30 company-owned and 17 franchise properties. The majority of these are full service properties, although there are more and more limited service locations. In 2006, Red Lion Hotels announced plans to double the number of properties under the Red Lion brand within five years through acquisitions in Texas, California and Nevada and a gradual eastern expansion. However, in 2009 the chain only managed to increase its ownership by two hotels. Between 2007 and 2008 the holding company of Red Lion Hotels Corporation lost a third of its market value and then applied a wage freeze and a five percent salary deduction for paid employees. In an interview in 2008, CEO Anupam Narayan stated that he hoped the chain lost six properties by the end of the year; franchises that are not committed to the necessary remodel program. In early 2014 Red Lion Hotels Corp shifted the company's focus from the market's financial struggle to hotel operations under the Red Lion banner. This is due to the stabilization in the hospitality market after the 2007 economic crisis. The company's new CEO of more than 25 years in the hospitality industry wants to focus more on providing high quality brands to corporate guests.

Marketing and promotion

In 2004, Red Lion launched a major advertising campaign under the tag line "Stay Comfortable." Featuring caricature of cartoon lions, this campaign includes full-page ads in daily newspapers in nine US cities, as well as USA Today regional editions. Created by ISM Boston, this campaign is recognized with the Adrian Award by the International Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association (HSMAI).

In February 2008, Red Lion announced it had changed and changed its name to "GuestAwards", its customer loyalty program. The newly launched "Red R & R Club" featuring the lower point redemption limit. In May 2014, the company announced it had changed its prize program, and no longer issued points. They begin announcing in August 2013 their reward program, called "Hello Rewards." The announcement information offers little detail, but claims to be "the most innovative rewards program" that will provide "an experience that is personalized with every reservation and stay at the hotel."
