History
Though 1876 is the official 'Oriental' opening of the Oriental Hotel, the Oriental Oriental origins can be traced back to 1863, when two Americans Captain Atkins Dyer and William West opened the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, Siam (now Thailand): however, the original building was burned only two years later, on June 11, 1865.
However, the history of the 'Mandarin' side of the group is relatively new: the Mandarin hotel opened only in 1963, in the Central District of Hong Kong Island. In 1973, The Excelsior Hotel, which continues to use a separate brand today, opened in Causeway Bay.
In 1974, Mandarin International Hotels Limited was formed as a hotel management company, with a view to expanding into Asia. That year, the company acquired 49% stake in Oriental Hotel, producing two "superior" hotels for the company.
In 1985, the Company incorporated two hotels under the common name, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. In 1987, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group was auctioned on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the name "Mandarin Oriental International Limited." Mandarin Oriental International Limited, established in Bermuda, and registered in London, Singapore and Bermuda. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group Limited, which operates out of Victoria City, manages the activities of the Group hotels.
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group operates, or is in development, 41 hotels representing over 10,000 rooms in 27 countries, with 18 hotels in Asia, 12 in America and 12 in Europe and North Africa. In addition, the Group operates, or is under development, 13 Residences at Mandarin Oriental, connected to the Group property.
Starting September 2005, Mandarin Oriental showed "Fun Moments at Mandarin Oriental" in all the hotels. In June 2006, the Delight video moments were slightly updated to add some new scenes and in October 2014, the video featured lyrics by Chinese singer Sa Ding Ding, accompanied by new music.

In January 2016, it was reported that Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group International Ltd. plans to buy the hotel and 85 units of luxury condominium buildings from CWB Hotel LP for $ 140 million. The cost of this deal is $ 945,945 per room, making this the most expensive room sale of a hotel ever recorded in the city of Boston.
Geneva
Opened in 1950 as HÃÆ'Ã'tel du Rhone it was the first hotel built in Europe after the Second World War. It was purchased by Mandarin Oriental Group in 2000 and renovated in 2008. Located on the right bank of the Rhone river in Geneva, it offers 167 rooms and 27 suites, as well as three restaurants and bars.
Guangzhou
Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou, designed by interior designer Tony Chi, opened in January 2013. Located next to TaiKoo Hui, the Mandarin Oriental hotel has 263 guest rooms and suites, four restaurants and bars, a specialty pastry shop and an extensive spa.

The Mandarin Oriental in Jakarta is a five star luxury hotel located on Thamrin Road near the Hotel Indonesia roundabout. Construction of the hotel began in 1976 and opened on 9 September 1978 as The Mandarin. This hotel is the last hotel to be built during the 1970's boom period in Jakarta. This hotel retains its status as a five star hotel in its history.
The Mandarin Oriental Jakarta contains 272 rooms. The hotel was renovated in 2008-2009.

Opened as a full service destination spa, Ananda - In the Himalayas is located in Narendra Nagar, Uttarakhand, located in the Himalayas of India. It was operated briefly by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group from 2000 to 2001. First developed by Rafael Hotels Limited in partnership with Indian Hotels and Health Resorts (IHHR), the resort was launched by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group after acquiring Rafael Hotels Limited in 2000. At that time, Rafael Hotels consisted of six luxury hotels, including The Mark Hotel in New York, HÃÆ'Ã'tel du RhÃÆ'Ã'ne in Geneva, Hotel Rafael in Munich and Turnberry Isle Resort & amp; Club in Miami. The hotel was formerly known as Mandarin Oriental Baan Taling Ngam located in Koh Samui, Thailand. The hotel was subsequently re fl ected under the Le Meridien hotel group and is now operated under the Intercontinental Hotels Group brand.
Macau
- Mandarin Oriental Macau The hotel was named Excelsior when it first reopened in 1984. The hotel became Oriental Hotel and then Hotel Mandarin Oriental. The hotel was purchased in 2009 by the owner of the Stanley Ho section and renamed Grand Lapa Hotel, Macau ahead of the current completion of Mandarin Oriental Macau Hotel and serviced apartments in 2010. The hotel is operated by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group until 31 January, 2014.
- Bela Vista Hotel, Macau: In the late 1980s The Excelsior (part of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group) issued a 25-year lease on the hotel from the Macau Government. Excelsior renovated hotel between 1990-92. When reopened its capacity is drastically reduced (only 4 suites, 4 rooms, restaurant, bar and function room) and run as a branch of the much larger Mandarin Oriental Macau hotel. This place was closed as a hotel on 31 March 1999, and sold to Portugal which turned it into Portuguese Consul when Macau was handed back to China in December 1999. Built in 1870, originally as a residence for Edward and Catherine Clarke, the English Captain and his wife , which turned it into a hotel called "Boa Vista" in 1890.
Manila
Previously The Mandarin Manila, the hotel opened in 1976 in Makati City, and was renamed Mandarin Oriental Manila in the 1980s. The hotel has more than 450 rooms. The hotel is closed in September 2014, with replacement scheduled to open in 2020 nearby in the Makati area.
San Francisco
Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco, occupies the top 11 floors of 345 34-storey California Headquarters offices in the financial district of San Francisco, California. The hotel's 151-room twin tower is located at a 45-degree angle relative to the rest of the building, with two glass skybridges offering views of the San Francisco Bay Area. In February 2015, the hotel was sold to the Loews Hotel Company.
Surabaya
Formerly Hotel Majapahit, this historic Indonesian hotel was completely renovated into a five star hotel and operated by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group from 1998 for about eight years as Hotel Majapahit, Surabaya.

Incident
Leslie Cheung committed suicide (2003)On April 1, 2003, singer, actor, and film producer Leslie Cheung jumped to his death from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental in Central, Hong Kong. Every year on the anniversary of his death, a memorial event hosted by fans takes place outside the hotel.
Beijing fire (2009)
On February 9, 2009, the Beijing Cultural Television Center, which will incorporate the Mandarin Oriental hotel, caught fire due to illegal fireworks celebrating the Chinese New Year. The structure was heavily damaged but did not collapse and is now being repaired. One firefighter died of the incident.
Credit card violation (2015)
In March 2015, a number of Mandarin Oriental hotels were affected by breach of security of the system of place of sale.
