History

The town of Locust Grove derives its name from a grove of locusts that can be seen all over the city. Locust Grove is a major railway distribution center for cotton, peach and other agricultural products. The city has three cotton barrels and several warehouses. In 1870, the first store was built on Main Street. Since then many new businesses have moved to Locust Grove.

In 1893, the city was founded and its letters were formally signed on December 20, 1893. The original city limits were extended one mile north and south of the train depot in the heart of the city and half a mile east and west of the train. The city government consists of a mayor and five council members. The first to fill these positions is lifted until elections can be made. The first mayor is M.P. So good. Those who were appointed to the first city council were G.P. Combs, C.M. Mahone, J.L. Garnder, R.C. Brown and W.H. Peeping. The first city clerk was C. W. Williams.

The first ordinance passed by the council limits the train speed to 15 miles per hour (24 km/h). There was a question about how to enforce this because the city did not have a police department at that time, but the train was notified. The city rejoined in 1922, and a new charter was established.

One of the important buildings in Henry County is the Locust Grove Institute (LGI), founded by Locust Grove Baptist Church and Mercer University. In 1894, the first building of the institute was founded, and the school opened on 1 November 1894, with 13 students and two instructors. At the end of the school year, 85 students have been enrolled. LGI is growing rapidly, and several houses in the community, such as Combs-McKnight-Morfoot House, are used as residential dormitories to help accommodate a growing student population.

Locust Grove Institute is one of the first schools in Georgia to be accredited by the Association of Schools and Colleges in South America. The curriculum emphasizes learning in all aspects of life, The academic building was built in 1904 for a total cost of $ 14,000. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1906. In 1918, LGI started a military training program for its students. In 1919, the agency transferred all property to the Georgia Baptist Convention.

The Great Depression and the introduction of public schools in Henry County led to the death of the Locust Grove Institute in May 1930. The school remained empty until 1936, when the academic building served as a public elementary school for the city. In 1983, the city of Locust Grove bought the building. Many renovations were made and structures restored, modifying the interior to the homes of various municipal government offices, now known as Locust Grove Municipal Complex. This building was included in the National Register of Historic Places on September 4, 1986.
