Lockout is a series of prison documentaries, produced by 44 Blue Productions, which airs on MSNBC. This franchise also includes Lockup: Raw, Lockup: World Tour Locked: Extended Stay Locking: Disturbing Peace >, Lockup: Special Investigations , and Life After Lockup .
Locking and other series in this franchise explore prisons and prison facilities throughout the United States, inmates profiles, incidents, and famous prison operations. A typical episode usually follows one or two inmates when they attend disciplinary hearings, receive visits from family, and interact with other prisoners. In some episodes, inmates are provided with a personal video camera ("camera inmates") to use in their cells to record their thoughts.
The title in the franchise agreement in a given area is as follows:
- Raw - Previous recordings that are not lined up from visits to various prisons, interspersed with comments from production crews
- Extended Stay - Block episodes that each focus on long-term visits to one prison
- World Tour - A visit to a prison in countries other than the United States
- Special Investigations - Focus on specific aspects of the prison system, usually the juvenile justice system
- Life After Lockout - Prisoners who have been released from prison and trying to get back into society
Most episodes end with a 'recapitulation', explaining what happens to certain prisoners (or, sometimes, a staff member) months or years after recording; the next episode will often return to certain prison (and/or certain prisoners) to visit them a few months later.
Cancellation Lockup was announced on 29 June 2016, with the 25th season as the last series.
