History
Founded in 1813, Jasper House was first North West Company, and then Hudson's Bay Company, a feather trading post on the York Express Factory trade route to what came to be called "New Caledonia" (now British Columbia), and Fort Vancouver in the Columbia District on the lower Columbia River.
Jasper National Park was founded in 1907. The railway in favor of the future townsite location was established by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1911 and was originally named Fitzhugh after the vice president of Grand Trunk (along the "alphabet" line of Grand Trunk). The Canadian North Train began serving Fitzhugh in 1912. The city's location was surveyed in 1913 by H. Matheson. It was renamed Jasper after the former trading post of feathers. An internment camp was established at Dominion Park in Jasper from February 1916 to August 1916.
In 1931, Jasper was accessible by road from Edmonton, and in 1940, the beautiful Icefields Parkway opened, connecting Lake Louise and Jasper.
