Geography

The overall geography of Agios Dimitrios can be appreciated in satellite view from Google Maps [1]. The village mostly surrounds the main road that runs north from Lixouri. The direct view of the main street are small houses, a taverna, various holiday accommodation, including two hotels. The area is rural and consists mainly of agricultural land. There is very low building density.

Deadly from the main road to the East, towards the sea, bringing a small residence with some accommodation for rent and finally down to the Argostoli Bay coastline. The coastline is a long narrow strip of sandy beach with scrub vegetation and no facilities. A small number of fishermen work from the area on small boats. The ocean is directly shallow with a wide weed bed. This area is known to be inhabited by turtles.

In addition to agriculture and tourism, small fishing activities are supported. Closest to the south, just before the village, is an automated mechanical car workshop and garage.

Facilities

In addition to a small number of local residences, there are various holiday accommodation, from bed & amp; studio breakfast, villa and hotel. There are also small hotels, such as Hotel Terra Mare with several acres of associated land where the holiday bungalows are set.

Taverna Angelos is located on the main street.

Another Taverna, Faros, can be found by changing the side of the road from the west side of the main road.

There are no shops or banks in the village. The closest shops back south on the main road to Lixouri, 25 minutes walk but five minutes in the car. They consist of a grocery store and a general household store, a takeaway food store, and a butcher selling a variety of meats. Most major shops, banks, medical services, and schools can be found in Lixouri. An exception to this is the nearest shop located just south of the village on the main road to Lixouri which is a large outdoor center, swimming pool, snorkeling, fishing and recreational equipment.

The fact that the local beaches are very narrow and no facilities means that tourists are hardly ever seen and therefore a quiet area to walk and admire the very open landscape over the bay. Cephalonia is famous for having several world-class beaches (eg, Myrtos Beach, Xi Beach, Petani Beach and Vatsa Bay) and it's easy to travel to one of them by car, which is what most tourists come to stay in this part of the island do.

Economy and environment

Like many areas in Cephalonia, Agios Dimitrios was originally based on farming and a small donation of fishing.

In recent years tourism has become an increasing priority in the Cephalonia economy with investments from the European Union under the 'Western Greek - Peloponnesus - Ionian Islands' Operational Program under the objectives of the Convergence funded jointly by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the 2007- 2013. The program budget is around EUR1.14 billion. Within this framework there are several priorities that are included

  • Priority 3: Infrastructure work & amp; accessibility in the Ionian Islands
  • Priority 6: Digital Convergence & amp; entrepreneurship in the Ionian Islands
  • Priority 7: Sustainable development & amp; quality of life in Western Greece

This high level strategic priority begins to have an effect and evidence can be seen even in Agios Dimitrios. The number of buildings dedicated to tourist trade and tourist accommodation has increased with the increase of local development. There is an increasing number of non-Greek citizens becoming residents and developing property within the village. There is also a migration to Cephalonia from a Greek citizen (or family member) who was originally displaced as a result of an earthquake in the 1950s.

Geology and Homer Ithaca

Recent geological studies show that the Paliki Peninsula, where Agios Dimitrios is located, was originally a separate island. Known as the Paliki Hypothesis, it is now suggested that in the Bronze Age, a major earthquake caused a landslide to fill a sea channel that created a bridge between Paliki and the main island. One implication of this is that the Paliki Peninsula, and the area where Agios Dimitrios is located is actually the original location for Homer Ithaca, the home of Odysseus, which he traveled after the Trojan War and was written as an epic tale, Homer Wandering.
