Hotel Sorrento is a 1995 Australian drama film directed by Richard Franklin. Three sisters gathered in the idyllic town of Sorrento in Australia after ten years of absence. One of the three has written a book entitled Melancholy that is a vivid version of their life. This film is an adaptation of the Hannie Rayson game of the same name.
"One of the many short reflections of this film is the exploration of the word" melancholy "- a word that fits perfectly with the tone and pace of the Sorrento Hotel."

Production
Richard Franklin has worked for several years in the US, although he has lived in Australia since 1985. He became frustrated with Hollywood and decided to make a movie for "home art market". He contacted his brother-in-law, Peter Fitzgerald, who had written a number of books in the Australian theater and asked him to recommend an Australian game that might make a good movie. Fitzpatrick lodged Hotel Sorrento and Franklin loved it. He made the film because he never saw the production of the drama.
Critical reception
The New York Times says that "The film goes into the comfortable provincial atmosphere which is at once entertaining and suffocating, and that gives some substance to the talk about the satisfaction and materialism of Australian society and its indifference to the artist." Cinephilia says "The drama by Hannie Rayson, with its familiar typology of character and Chekovian dialogue, undoubtedly provides a pleasant entertainment in the setting of the original stage, but as Franklin adapts with Peter Fitzpatrick and diverts this large screen. a family filled with all sorts of looks like overheated material (Meg's line "I'm looking for a pure Dick" No. 96, though not intentional). "
