Separation from health facilities occurs whenever the patient (or resident) goes away from death, exit, out of advice or medical transfer. The number of separations is the most commonly used measure for hospital service utilization. Separation, rather than acceptance, is used because hospital abstracts for inpatient care are based on information collected upon return.

This is one measure of morbidity used when determining disease burden. The second factor used was long hospitalization. In Australia, the separation of 2004-05 main hospitals is:

  1. Digestive Problems.
  2. Neoplasms.
  3. Injury/Poisoning.
  4. Pregnancy/child birth.
  5. Musculoskeletal disease.
  6. Genitourinary Disease.
  7. Respiratory Disease.

On the other hand, as expected, the duration of hospitalization is as follows (from the longest to the shortest):

  1. Mental/Behavioral Disorders: Schizophrenia, delusional disorders, mood disorders.
  2. Circulatory system diseases.
  3. Neoplasms.
  4. Injury/Poisoning.
