History

Architects George Page was assigned in 1903 by Mary Chynoweth, widow of Anson Hayes and wife of San Jose Thomas Chynoweth lawyer, to build a house to replace the Baresque family home of the Hayes family, which had been burned down in 1899. Aimed at providing shelter triple trip for the Chynoweth family and the families of Mary's growing sons (Everis A. Hayes and Jay Orly Hayes), this house design incorporates the latest fire safety features of the day.

Initially, the property was self-sufficient, with its own power station, post office, railway station, train stops, lodging for 40 hand farms, and a chapel. The family grows fruits and vegetables and raises their livestock. Everis A. Hayes and Jay Hayes continue to help develop the fruit industry of Santa Clara Valley and become publishers of San Jose Mercury . Three US Presidents visit the mansion as long as they are famous.

The family sold the property during the 1950s, after which the building remained empty for some time then became dilapidated. Bought by the City of San Jose during the 1990s, the property was renovated and expanded to its present state. The building now has 33,000 square feet (3,100 m) with a meeting room and 214 guest rooms and is surrounded by a 20 hectare (8.1 ha) park.
