History
The name comes from the former luxury resort of Hotel Del Monte (now the Graduate School of the Navy). Charles Crocker, one of the top four California railway kings, founded the resort through the Southern Pacific Railroad property division of the Pacific Improvement Company. The first hotel was completed in 1880, with the nearest depot in Monterey Bay. Del Monte includes hotels, parks, a polo field, and a golf course. The property extends to the south and southeast of the hotel and includes parks, parks, polo fields, racecourses, and golf courses. The development of Del Monte also includes a beautiful drive from the hotel to other parts of the resort, Pebble Beach, in Monterey Peninsula. A portion of the drive was preserved as a 17 mile drive.
The Delmonte post office operated at Hotel Del Monte from 1882 to 1883. The Del Monte Post Office opened in 1901, closed for a period of time in 1911, and was closed for good in 1951.
The city of Monterey annexed Del Monte in 1948.
Del Monte is Spanish for "from the forest" or "in the forest".
