History

The Candlewood Suites chain was started in 1995 by Jack Deboer, founder of Residence Inn and co-founder of the Summerfield Suites chain. The first hotel was built on North Webb Road in Wichita, Kansas, United States, and opened in 1996.

Brand locations are extended-stay hotels focused primarily on level-sensitive business travelers, also known as temporary corporate travelers. Usually transient tourist companies only stay for a week, leaving occupancy of the lower hotel subjects over the weekend. However, with a properly extended business stay of more than seven days, and often outside of 30 days, it allows the hotel to maintain an overall higher occupancy rate overall. While these dwellings generally come with lower average or average daily rates (ADR), revenues per room available for sale (RevPAR) are typically higher as a result of significantly higher occupancy and penetration rates in their respective markets. respectively.

The public facilities provided by Candlewood fit the brand standards and according to the IHG website include spacious suites with fully equipped kitchens, free local calls, voice mail, data ports and two phone lines; an on-site convenience store with cheap meals (bed closets); a free entertainment library of CDs and videos available at the front desk; free guest laundry; free 24-hour training facility; free fax service; and an open barbecue gazebo. A "brown bag" breakfast is available for purchase, consisting of fruit, granola bars and drinks. Candlewood Suites does not offer free continental or hot breakfast at any location, although certain locations can offer it. Also common to the Candlewood brand is the lack of a large swimming pool or meeting room or spacious lobby. Consistent with extended-stay business, housekeeping staff and fees are greatly reduced by the operation of this type of hotel because daily room cleaning is not provided for long stay guests.

From 1995 to 2003, Candlewood Hotel Company has franchised and managed hotels throughout the US. In January 2004, Candlewood Suites was acquired by IHG. As of September 30, 2007, there are 151 Candlewood Suites hotels currently open, with 187 hotels on the pipeline, with an estimated 50 of these hotels opened in 2007. There are now 342 locations worldwide. Candlewood competes with other affordable and extended hotels like TownePlace Suites and Mainstay Suites.
