Tourism Strategy

City announced that on the road to implement a strategy that would turn it into the best and most cosmopolitan Mediterranean tourist resort, a vision supported by Cyprus's national tourism strategy

The Vision of the City is in 2030 to become the best and most cosmopolitan tourist resort in Europe, a resort while visitors will enjoy, its business will prospect, and its citizens will be proud. Beginning in 2013, the resort has implemented a series of measures to fulfill its vision, improving infrastructure, improvements in the hotel (hotel and restaurant) business, closing the problem-creating company, mega projects under development such as the 250 million euro marina and major events and festivals have been added to calendar events that aim to improve the quality of tourist resorts and promote the cosmopolitan aspect and its quality. The vision set by the city is supported and by the Cyprus National Tourism strategy.

Cyprus Tourism Strategy for 2030 completed in March 2017. establishes it as a vision for the following Ayia Napa: Ayia Napa - should aspire to be considered one of Europe's top 3 beach vacation and nightclubbing destinations, with a customer value proposition (CVP) offers the best beach and sea experience in Cyprus for Young Adults, complemented by international standard beach club and nightlife.

This strategy evaluates the quality of Ayia Napa as 3.4/5 and proposes that its future direction should be quality improvement in all areas of tourism products from accommodation to nightlife with a view to improving its quality evaluation to 4.4/5

On March 6, 2018 City has announced on the media a shift to a tourism strategy that has a primary goal of increasing quality over quantity, and turning low-quality nightlife into cosmopolitan night life. City council after hearing all the stakeholders of Ayia Napa tourism, has voted unanimously to low quality youth tourism products (organized youth) who behave badly and disrespect the laws of Cyprus and with their actions create negative publicity for the resort and really do not damage the reputation brand name "Ayia Napa", which according to the City announcement has worked communally very hard to re-position and reintroduce in recent years.

History

According to local legend, the area around the monastery was accidentally discovered by a hunter in the pursuit of its prey. Once found, the icon of the Virgin Mary in the area is called the Virgin Mary of Napa, eventually shortened to Ayia Napa. The monastery, built in 1100, was built around the cave, in honor of the Virgin Mary of Ayia Napa. According to local tradition, no one lived near Ayia Napa until 1790. The first inhabitants were Nikolaos Kemitzis of Thessaloniki, who arrived from Greece around 1790 and settled in the village of Panayia, located in the northeast part of Ayia Napa. Kemitzis quarreled with the Ottoman rulers who ruled Cyprus at the time, and decided to move near the Ayia Napa monastery.

The Cypriot government, recognizing the importance of Ayia Napa for the Cyprus economy, decided in 2014 to characterize Ayia Napa as the main city - the city center. This is credited to the efforts of the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Yiannis Karousos. Today, Ayia Napa is the largest tourist resort in Cyprus, with a capacity of 27,000 beds and over 145 hotels and apartments of all sizes. In 2017, the resort receives over 700,000 tourists and accommodates 5 million overnight stays, representing approximately 30% of all lodgings in Cyprus. The city of Ayia Napa has the seventh largest budget of 30 active municipalities of Cyprus, and employs 230 people.
