Histori
The Hotel Excelsior opened on 18 January 1906. It was built by Actiengesellschaft fÃÆ'¼r Hotelunternehmungen, based in Lucerne, Switzerland. They sold the hotel in 1920 to CIGA, Compagnia Italiana Grandi Alberghi, or Italian Grand Hotels Company, an Italian luxury chain. In 1944, the hotel became the temporary headquarters of General Mark Clark after the US Army entered Rome.
Aga Khan IV bought CIGA in 1985, then sold it to the Sheraton Hotel in 1994, which put Excelsior in their Luxury Collection. In 1998, the Sheraton was sold to Starwood Hotels, and Excelsior was transferred to their Westin Hotel division, named The Westin Excelsior, Rome . The hotel was completely renovated in 2000. Starwood sells hotels to Katara Hospitality based in Qatar in 2015 for EUR222 Million.

In popular culture
The hotel hosted the cast and crew of Ben-Hur in 1959. La Dolce Vita was filmed around the hotel in 1960 and Two Sundays in Other Cities were filmed in the hotel in 1962. Part of the 1983 miniseries The Winds of War was filmed at the hotel, like a scene in the 2009 musical period Nine .
The hotel is characterized by its distinctive dome, and for the two-storey "Villa la Cupola" suite located on the fifth and sixth floor below. This suite is listed as one of the most expensive hotel rooms in the world, and includes hand-painted wall paintings, up to seven bedrooms, and a private cinema.
