Survivor: San Juan del Sur - Blood vs. Air is the twenty-ninth season of the competitive reality television series of CBS America Survivor, which airs on September 24, 2014. Similar to Survivor: Blood vs. Water , this season features a couple of loved ones competing against each other, but unlike Blood vs Water , all new players. The season was filmed in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, the same location as Survivor: Nicaragua and Survivor: Redemption Island . The two hour and one hour reunion event aired on December 17, 2014, where Natalie Anderson was crowned the winner of Jaclyn Schultz and Missy Payne.

This season sees the return of Exile Island, the latter used in Survivor: Tocantins . In lieu of the reward challenge, an outcast and their loved ones will square off in a duel. The losers are sent to Exile Island, while the winners get rewarded for their tribe and must send one of their tribes to the Island of Exile as well. The two exiles sent to the Exile Islands then had to choose one of two vases, where only one had clues to a hidden immune idol located in their tribal camp. The Exile Island continued after the merger with one man who was exiled by the prize winners, where there would be one jar with instructions for a hidden idol somewhere in exile.

DVD releases this season are planned and currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com, however, no release date has been announced.

Season summary

Nine pairs of loved ones are separated into two tribes: Coyopa and Hunahpu. Coyopa lost almost every challenge; The tribe was initially dominated by a male alliance led by John, but Josh was split between loyalty to men and constantly targeting Baylor. At Hunahpu, Jeremy and Natalie are aligned after their loved ones are chosen, and arguing with John in the challenge of eliminating their loved ones. Because of John's volatility, Josh arranged his dismissal and took over the alliance. After a tribal exchange, Missy's mother - Baylor - begins to rule in Coyopa, while Josh and Jeremy compete to control Hunahpu. While the two men target each other, their conflicts are never solved because their tribe won every challenge.

At the time of the merger, two factions emerged: Jeremy's alliance with Natalie, Julie, Missy and Baylor, and Josh's alliance with his girlfriend Reed, Wes and his father Keith, and Alec, with dating couples Jon and Jaclyn in the middle. While they were preparing to side with Josh's alliance for the first post-merge Unity Council, it was canceled after Julie stepped out of the game, giving Jon and Jaclyn time to change their minds and sides with Jeremy's fellowship to get rid of Josh. Jeremy's wealth would not last long, and he was blinded by his ally, Natalie. While Natalie rejoined her old alliance to retrieve the remnants of Josh's alliance, Keith spared Natalie's revenge, choosing Jon and Baylor and leaving no remaining lovers. Keith then missed the last immune challenge and was the last player to opt out of the game.

Missy, Jaclyn, and Natalie are the last three. At the last Tribal Council, Reed removed the entrails of Missy's character, comparing it to the "evil stepmother" and punished him for lack of strategy, while Jaclyn was questioned for just doing moves with others, especially Jon. Natalie was praised for making bold moves without the support of loved ones, and was finally awarded the title of Survivor Single with five voices to win, compared to two Jaclyn and one from Missy.

In the case of some stranded people who win prizes, they are listed in the order of completion, or alphabetically where they are teamwork; where one person is wasted winning and inviting the other, the invites are in square brackets.

Reception

Survivor: San Juan del Sur greeted with mixed acceptance, with the consensus being that although it improved towards the end, it was too little too late. Entertainment Weekly 's Survivor columnist Dalton Ross called the cast "tedious, if not rude," and said that there was no prominent moment of the season. Ross added, "This is not a season that inspires anger or anger, just apathy, which is probably the worst indictment of all." Despite adding that the final episode of the season was an improvement, as well as praising Anderson's post-merger game, Ross finally rated it as the fifth worst season of the series, just ahead of One World , Thailand , Fiji , and Nicaragua . The season is also equal to the fifth worst ranking by Andrea Deiher of Zap2it in 2015, just above Africa , Vanuatu , Thailand , and Redemption Island . Survivor: Tocantins Runner-up and People Survivor columnist Stephen Fishbach calls it "boring" season, and even though it's a "great" winner, "he also called the Last Tribal Council "one of the worst in show history. "Host presenter Jeff Probst acknowledges this season is lackluster, especially when compared to the previous four seasons.Responding whether he does not like most players, he states that" there is a lot of frustration this season, "but similar to Ross, adding that" it gets distant better in walking. "In 2015, The Purple Rock Podcast's fan site Survivor rated San Juan Del Sur as the 8th worst season of the series, depicting cast as "realistically about 80% animal feed," and it's "hard to get through how uninteresting these players are. "Also in 2015, a poll on the site of former contestant Survivor contestant and TV reality TV host Rob Cesternino saw San Juan Del Sur ranked 22 out of 30. Rob himself ranked it in the top half of the season at number 15. While Tom Santilli of Examiner.com reserves some praise for aspects such as idol dramas and Keith Nale's memories, he says that the season "consists mainly of players full of people who can only be regarded as' non-gamers, '"and ultimately concluded that" something about this season is not enough to click, and I'm afraid most will be forgotten over time. "Gordon Holmes of Xfinity also sums up:" I did not get this season. There was a big, exciting movement, but it did not feel right. It just does not show up. "
