The Maui Invitational , currently known as Maui Jim Maui Invitational , is an early college basketball tournament held on Thanksgiving Sunday in Lahaina, Hawaii, at the Lahaina Civic Center at the island of Maui. It is hosted by Chaminade University of Honolulu, NCAA Division II school. Seven NCAA Division I male basketball teams were invited to Maui to finish the field. The Maui Invitational has been played since 1984, brought by ESPN. Maui Jim became the main sponsor of the tournament in 2015; fourteen previous tournaments sponsored by EA Sports.

The tournament is rooted in a game that is considered one of the biggest annoyances in the history of college. On December 23, 1982, University of Virginia at the top and unbeaten tour made a scheduled trip to Honolulu for a match. Initially trying to play at the University of Hawaii, Virginia agreed to play Chaminade, which at the time belonged to NAIA, on a trip instead. In a game that is not broadcast and covered only by a sports writer from outside the local media (Michael Wilbon of The Washington Post, who was in Honolulu to cover the University of Maryland show on the Aloha Bowl premier), Chaminade defeated the Virginia team led by Ralph Sampson 77-72 ahead of 3,300 spectators at the Honolulu International Center. Shortly after the upset, Virginia head coach Terry Holland congratulated Chaminade's athletic director, Mike Vasconcellos, and advised him that he was considering starting a Hawaiian tournament. Two years later, the Maui Classic was unveiled with Chaminade reaching the final and losing to Providence.
Today the tournament gives schools the chance to compete in a neutral court with some of the country's top basketball programs. Associated Press college basketball editor Jim O'Connell calls Maui Jim Maui Invitational "the best tournament of the season in the country - a standard used by everyone else." About 108 schools representing 26 conferences and 40 states have competed in Maui Jim Maui Invitational. The five-time Maui Invitation tournament winner Jim Maui has won the Division I NCAA Division I Division Basketball Championships that season: Michigan in 1988, North Carolina three times - in 2004, 2008, and 2016, and Connecticut in 2010.
Of the eight teams playing on the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, there is generally one of each of the six major conferences (Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East (before 2013 split), ACC, and SEC), one from the conference such as the American Athletic Conference, USA Conference, Western Mountain Conference or Atlantic 10, and Chaminade. Starting with the 2011 tournament, the field includes four additional ground teams that play teams living on Maui at home. Four mainland teams will then play each other in regional matches. The winners of each match will take their place in the championship contest, preceded by a game of entertainment between the losers.
Starting in 2018 and continuing with every single year, Chaminade will play in the mainland, and eight Division I schools will compete in the championship bracket on Maui. In the odd numbered years, Chaminade will compete in the championship bracket.

Every year more than 4,000 overseas visitors - spacers, players, officials, teams and game personnel, media representatives, sponsors, production crew and basketball fans in general - attend. 2007 Invitational Tournament Maui ranks among Hawaii's main revenue-generating events, strengthening the local economy by more than $ 8 million according to financial data released by the Maui Visitors Bureau.
