Background and recording
On the day of "Long Cool Woman" recorded on AIR Studios, group producer, Ron Richards, was sick and, consequently, the song was produced by the group. This song is different from most other Hollies songs where there is no three-part vocal harmony, and this song features lead guitar and lead vocal work by Allan Clarke. Upon returning, Ron Richards mixed the recording.
The song is written in the swamp rock style of Creedence Clearwater Revival, in terms of vocals, rhythm, and melodic style. It appeared in the spring of 1972 (the same year Creedence split). Clarke imitated John Fogerty's vocal style, based on the Creedence song "Green River". According to Clarke, the song was written "about five minutes".

Reception
In Britain's original Hollies, the song was just a modest success for the band, peaking at number 32 on the charts. However, it became a surprisingly great success in the United States, peaking at number 2 for two weeks behind Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)". It is their highest chart single in America. It also got number 2 in Australia. By this time, Clarke had left the band, but he felt that "it was unfortunate", because he had written the song. Clarke rejoined Hollies in the summer of 1973, partly because of the success of this song.
