When the Vietnam War raged in 1969, John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono held two long weeks for Bed-Ins for Peace, one at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam and one at the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth in Montreal, each of which was meant to be a non protest - violence against war, and experimental tests of new ways to promote peace. This idea stems from "sit-in action", in which a group of protesters remain seated in front of or inside a company until they are evicted, captured, or their demands are met.

The public event was filmed, and later turned into a documentary. Movie Bed Peace was made available for free on YouTube in August 2011 by Yoko Ono, as part of its "Imagine Peace" website.

Bed-in Amsterdam

Knowing the marriage of March 20, 1969 they will be a great event, John and Yoko decided to use publicity to promote world peace. They spent their honeymoon in the presidential suite (Room 702) at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel for a week between the 25th and 31st of March, inviting the world press to their hotel room every day between 9am and 9pm. After their nonconformist artistic expressions (see Bari: 33), like the naked cover of the album Two Virgins, the press expects them to have sex, but instead the couple just sits in bed. wearing pajamas - in John's words "like an angel" - talking about peace with signs on their bed reading "Hair of Peace" and "Bed of Peace". After seven days, they flew to Vienna, Austria, where they held a Bagism press conference.

During April 1969, John and Yoko sent acorns to heads of state in various countries around the world in the hope that they would plant them as a symbol of peace. For eight months, the couple had not been given a single visit with any world leader. Their marriage ("You can marry in Gibraltar near Spain"), First Bed ("Speaking in our bed for a week"), Vienna press conference ("Make a quick trip to Vienna... The papers say..." ), and seeds ("50 seeds tied in sack") are all mentioned in the song "The Ballad of John and Yoko".

Because of the very public image of John and Yoko, Amsterdam Bed-In was greeted by fans, and received a lot of press coverage. After the event, when asked if he thought Bed-In had been successful, John became somewhat frustrated. He insisted that the failure of the press to take a partner seriously was part of what he and Yoko wanted: "It's part of our policy not to be taken seriously. Our opposition, whoever they are, in any real form, does not know how to handle humor. we are humorous. "

Their second Bed-In was planned to take place in New York, but Lennon was not allowed into the US due to her 1968 marijuana belief. Instead they intend to hold events in the Bahamas at Sheraton Oceanus Hotel, flying there on May 24, 1969, but after spending one night in the hot air, they decide to move to Montreal.

They flew to Montreal on May 26, where they stayed in Rooms 1738, 1740, 1742, and 1744 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. During the seven days they stayed, they invited Timothy Leary, Tommy Smothers, Dick Gregory, Murray K, Al Capp, Allen Ginsberg and others, and all but Capp singing in the song Peace "Give Peace a Chance", recorded by Andrà © © Perry in a hotel room on June 1, 1969. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation conducted an interview from a hotel room. The event received mixed reactions from the American press.

In December 1969, John and Yoko spread their message of peace with a bulletin board saying "WAR IS MORE! If You Want It - Merry Christmas From John and Yoko" . This billboard ride in eleven major cities of the world.

In popular culture and later bed-ins

The Bed-in show has since been reinterpreted and re-used in protests by a number of artists since 1969, notably Marijke van Warmerdam with his gallerist Kees van Gelder at the same Hilton Amsterdam in 1992 and the 2005 Center of Attention in Miami. The fictional Bed-In protest was also featured in Viva Voce's 2006 music video.

The show is referenced in the Oasis song "Do not Look Back in Anger", where vocalist Noel Gallagher sings "I'm going to start a revolution from my bed, because you said my brain has gone to my head." The last lyrics should have been said by Lennon during the conversations recorded in his room at Hotel Dakota.

In the music video for the song Marcy Playground, "It's Saturday", the group finds their way to John Lennon and Yoko's bed during their sleep in.

Members of Linkin Park, Chester Bennington and Mr. Hahn imitated the incident in a photograph taken by Greg Watermann in his book From The Inside: Linkin Park's Meteora .

In late 2006, Billie Joe Armstrong, California rock band vocalist Green Day, and his wife, Adrienne Armstrong, performed the same bed, featuring Billie Joe and Adrienne lying in bed, with posters on their heads saying "Make Love Not a War" in Spanish.

In Lewis Black's Root of All Evil novel, comedian Andy Daly showed off a video clip showing that he had also tried bedding to protest the War in Iraq. Trying to imitate the original Lennon and Yoko bed, she climbed into the bed of an Asian woman, the pepper-spray of Daly.

Japanese pop duo Puffy Amiyumi paid homage to Bed-in on the cover of their album Nice.

American singer Jhene Aiko imitated a picture with Childish Gambino from John Lennon and Yoko Ono in their bed for the single "Bed Peace" from her Sail Out EP .
