Careers

Both Mosshart and Hince played in other bands before they formed The Kills in 2001. Mosshart was previously the band's lead singer Floridian punk band, while Hince performed in the English rock bands of Fiji, Scarfo and Blyth Power. Mosshart meets Hince when his band is on a tour of England where "he lives upstairs flat from where I live" in London. Mosshart insisted on forming a band with Hince and "really survived, and finally we started writing and he pushed me". Hince gave him a four-track cassette recorder and insisted he write music as well as lyrics while on tour with his band. The two continued to exchange music ideas by sending their respective tapes. The discount was dissolved in 2000, and Mosshart moved to London in the same year. Before setting the name, Mosshart and Hince appear as "VV" and "Hotel", respectively, Hince explains that they "named each other from the top of our heads as a stupid romantic ode to the pop art scene". The duo chose The Kills because "it sounds like a band that can exist in every decade".

Using ideas on the cassette, Mosshart and Hince started writing minimalist songs with the help of a drum machine. In 2001 they showed off their new songs on demo tape; However, this couple avoids the approach of major record labels. Recording as a VV and a Hotel, they donate the song "Restaurant Blouse" to a compilation If Twenty-First Century Nothing Will Be Required to Create it . Shortly after this they recorded their debut release, Black Rooster EP , which saw a release on British indie label Domino Records and was picked up for distribution by Dim Mak Records in the United States.

It's a good lo-fi in terms of music and aesthetics. The tape featured photos of Mosshart and Hince taken in photo booths rather than professional photography. Musically, the tape was a rare rock/blues workshop, lo-fi. Although the band cites Captain Beefheart, PJ Harvey, LCD Soundsystems, The Velvet Underground, The Fall, Patti Smith, Suicide and Royal Trux as a direct influence, the music press has very comparing it to The White Stripes.

Stay On Your Side

After the international tour, they entered Toe Rag Studios, where White Stripes has recorded their album Elephant , to record their debut album Keep on Your Mean Side , mostly on the 8- track, in just 2 weeks. Distributed in the US and UK by Rough Trade Records, the album is similar to the EP style, veering off Velvets-esque stomping "Wait" to noisy, dirty garage punk punk "Fuck the People" and dark psychedelia of "Kissy Kissy". Records are well received by the music press, although the comparison of White Stripes will not disappear.

Maintaining anti-kariris attitude, anti-music industry, bands rarely given interviews. Instead, they got the music press to come to them with their live performances (which also included a drum machine). Mosshart chain-smoking while singing, rarely speaking to the audience; at the New York City show following the smoking ban in public, Mosshart climbed onto the stage with three bottles of water, lit a cigarette and started smoking continuously from the first song to the last note of the set. In 2004, Mosshard and Hince bought a house together in Dalston.

In 2005, "Monkey 23" was used in "De battre mon coeur s'est arrÃÆ'ªtÃÆ' Â ©", the film by Jacques Audiard. It is played during closing credits. It was also featured in season three of Peaky Blinders (TV series).

In 2006, "Kissy Kissy" was used in Children of Men , a film by Alfonso Cuarón. It was played on Avalon Radio and described as "a blast from the past all the way back to 2003, a wonderful moment when people refuse to accept the future just around the corner".

No Wow

Their second album, No Wow , was released by Domino Records on February 21, 2005. Showing meaner sounds, less "guitar rock sounds", recording embraced post punk influences and sounded even more stripped than < i> Keep on Your Mean Side . Originally written to be performed on Moog, the band was forced to change direction and record it primarily using a guitar after Hince's Moog was broken and can not be repaired before entering the studio. A 40 minute DVD documentary is included with a limited number of copies and features interviews, shows, and road image footage on the tour.

The first single, "The Good Ones", from No Wow , was released on February 7, 2005 and reached number 23 on the UK Singles Chart, which is their highest chart on the chart to date.

Shortly after the announcement of the event, the band's record label, Domino Records confirmed that the duo was working on the next album. In May 2014, Mosshart said that they are looking for new sounds and that this new album will be completely different from the others. He notes that " You never know what will happen with a note when you're writing. It can be done abruptly in two months, or it could take another year. You get this tangent line , and you find a new direction. You can follow the scent wherever you take it.Sometimes it takes a long time.Sometimes very fast.
