The Dublin Mayor's Office was created in June 1229 by Henry III. The Mayor's Office was appointed to Lord Mayor in 1665 by Charles II, and as part of this process received the honor of The Right Honorable ( The Hon Rt. ). Lords Major is an ex-officio member of the Irish Advisory Council, which also entitles them to be handled by the Honorable. Although the Privy Council was de facto abolished in 1922, the Lord Major continues to be entitled to be handled as The Right Honorable as a result of the Municipal Corporations (Ireland) Act 1840, which grants degrees in law. The Local Government Act 2001 finally removed the title as a consequence of the repeal of 1840 acts.

Function

The office is largely symbolic and its responsibilities consist of presiding over Town Council meetings and representing cities in public events. Regardless of some of the functions reserved, implemented by the City Council as a whole, executive power is exercised by the Chief Executive, a Board official appointed by the Public Appointment Service (formerly by the Local Appointment Commission). Except on a few occasions where the city authorities have been suspended for not striking the tariff (the local tax rate), Dublin has a mayor for nearly eight hundred years.

Mr. Mayor lives in an 18th century Mansion House on Dawson Street.

The privilege enjoyed by Lord Mayor is to receive Dublin's first car registration number for each new year.

Office Chain

A chain is an outward sign of the Mayor's office and is used in the city when performing official civil functions, important events as well as eligible at other times, such as opening conferences, new business, etc. It is also used, at Mr. Mayor's discretion, when paying visits to places such as schools, churches and emergency services.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin's gold office chain was presented by King William III (William of Orange) to the City of Dublin in 1698. This chain consists of decorative links including a rising Tudor, a harp, a trefoil-shaped knot and a S letter (supposedly supporting Seneschal or Steward).
