The island of Granada (Spanish: Isletas de Granada ) is located on Lake Nicaragua, just southeast of the city of Granada in Nicaragua. The islet is a group of 365 small islands scattered around the Asese peninsula. The island comes from a volcano, they formed when the Mombacho volcano blew many cones into the lake thousands of years ago, thus creating the archipelago. Most of the island is covered with vegetation and is rich with bird life.
Many islands are occupied. Some are privately owned and have a home or holiday home. There are facilities for residents and tourists. Hotels and shops are established on several islands, and boating tours are also available.

Somoza dictatorship and subsequent history
Many islanders were forced to move to the mainland in the 1990s after living there for generations. During Somoza's dictatorship, members of his National Guard forced many locals to sell their island or take the risk by force. After the Sandinista revolution, many of the islands were returned to previous owners. In 1990, when the Sandinistas lost power in elections, land certificates have not been granted to the population. Working through an anti-Sandinista court system, the islands were returned to members of the original National Guard family who had "confiscated" the islands. Several of these islands have been sold to Nicaraguan and foreigners, who generate an uncertain future for local Nicaraguans who traditionally live on nearby islands and peninsulas.
