State Road 429 (SR 429), also known as Daniel Webster Western Beltway or Western Expressway south of US Highway 441 and Wekiva Parkway on the northern US Highway 441, is a restricted access tollway built and maintained by the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), Turnpike Enterprise in Florida, and the Florida Transportation Department (FDOT). The current outline extends 43.19 miles (69.51 km) from Interstate 4 (State Road 400) in the Four Corners north to SR 46 in Sorrento. City controls are Apopka and Tampa although city controls for traffic at the entrance on US Highway 441 and north are Orlando, Tampa, and Daytona Beach. SR 429 was originally planned as the western part of State Road 417.

Route description

State Road 429 crosses some of the highest elevations in Orange County and is often within a few miles of the Lake Wales Ridge. It runs along the western side of Greater Orlando. The highlight of the road in Mile Marker 13 where on sunny days it is possible to see the skyline of downtown Orlando to the northeast and the Mountain Room, Cinderella Castle, Spaceship Earth (Epcot), The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and the Contemporary Resort of Walt Disney World in the southeast.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise maintains a section of the toll road south of Seidel Road, and the CFX controls the northern part of the intersection. FDOT will control the part being built on the north of State Road 46.

History

The highway is named "Daniel Webster Western Beltway" in honor of Daniel Webster, Florida's longest-serving member of the legislature and figure who is often involved in state transportation issues.

Part A

Part A is the original 10.6 mile (17.1 km) section of Florida's Turnpike at Ocoee, to US 441 in Apopka. It has a toll plaza in the middle, which is the first toll-plaza in the Orlando area with open roads chiming for E-Pass users and associated electronic toll collection systems. The road itself was completed in July 2000, ended temporarily at SR 50, and the intersection with Florida's Turnpike, which featured the highest road in the Orlando area, was completed in February 2001.

SR 429 was originally planned to proceed north from the original 441 US intersection, but since the required land for SR 429 roads was not secured before, new housing was developed in the former north SR 429/US 441 (now SR 451/US 441) intersection. This has forced changes in plans for the expansion of SR 429.

Part B

Part B, also known as Wekiva Parkway , will connect SR 429 from US 441 to I-4 in Sanford. This 40-mile (40 km) road is still under construction. This has been debated for more than a decade, as its planned alignment is complicated by the ecological and fragile Wekiva River valley and support from Lake County. In 2004, an agreement was reached for its completion. It will be built largely as a long-haul road with limited number of exits to control better development in the region. Now planned to connect SR 429 with SR 417, create a sustainable beltway north of Orlando; however, longer plans involve short trips on I-4 or road collectors/distributors to reach SR 417.

On May 25, 2011, the Florida Transportation Department and the Orlando-Orange County Express Authority announced that it has partnered to jointly explore the expansion of the Wekiva Parkway expansion. The proposed route will extend through Orange, Lake, and Seminole counties and is estimated to cost $ 1.8 billion. Officials hope to break down in 2012, by completion in 2021.

On January 20, 2016, the first pioneer section of County Road 435 (Mount Plymouth Road) near Haas Road in Orange County to State Road 46 east of Camp Challenge Road in Lake County opened to traffic and it was the first all electronic toll road in Central Florida.

On July 27, 2017, Wekiva Parkway's main line was extended from the US 441 connector road to the new northern terminal on Kelly Park Road.

On March 31, 2018, the main line of Wekiva Parkway was extended from Kelly Park Road to the new northern terminal on State Road 46. Along with this, a 3.36 mile (5.41 km) spur was known as the State Road 453 linking the Wekiva Parkway with State Road 46 near Sorrento opens along with an extension. This is the last part of Part 2 CFX from the path, and the end of the CFX section altogether. The final 12 miles (19 km) from Wekiva Parkway between State Road 46 and I-4 is being built and is planned to open in early 2022. This section will be built and maintained by FDOT.

Part C

Part C is a 22 mile (35 km) section of Florida's Turnpike to I-4 (SR 400) at Four Corners south of Walt Disney World. The 3-mile (4.8 km) section of Florida's Turnpike to County Road 535 was completed in December 2002. Parts of CR 535 south to W Osceola Parkway opened December 16, 2005, with an extension to the US 192 opening December 23. The maintenance-maintained section of the highway, south of Seidel Road, is in a very tight construction schedule. An extended cold snap required the contractor to push to reach the opening date, although the intersections in Western Way and Seidel Road are incomplete. West Road Exchange is not scheduled to open until the Spring of 2006 to coincide with the opening of the newly rising Animal Kingdom Everest Expedition. Gantry open highway, while located north of US 192, was left for development with five miles south (8 km) and was never intended to be open to traffic simultaneously with the opening of 2005 between US 192 and Seidel. The Schofield Road Exchange is identified as a future intersection, meaning that on December 23 there was no open exchange between US 192 and New Independence Parkway. Another opening was April 4, 2006 for Western Way, April 12, 2006 for Seidel Road, and December 9, 2006 for the remainder from US 192 south to I-4. Schofield Road Exchange opened in May 2015.

State Road 414 Phase 2

During June 2010, construction work began in the western extension of State Road 414. About 1 mile of the current SR 429 road was destroyed and on May 14, 2012 a new intersection opened from SR 429 northward to SR 414 eastward and from SR 414 toward west to SR 429 to the south. SR 429 and SR 414 are now proceeding simultaneously to a new intersection with US Route 441 near Plymouth, Florida where the appointment of SR 414 is over. The city of control is Mount Dora, Florida. The previous road signed as SR 429 north of the intersection of SR 414 has now been redesigned as State Road 451, and has been extended in US 441 to the new northern terminal on Vick Road.
