Allington is a civilian village and parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies 3 miles (5 km) north-west of Grantham. The 2001 census gave the parish population 728 in 329 households. This increased to a population of 897 in 422 households in the 2011 census.

History

Some evidence has been found to be settled in the Neolithic period. Roman artefacts have also been found nearby. The population at the time of the Book of Domesday was about 300. At the time of Norman's conquest the name of the village was Adelinctune. It belongs to the historical wapentake of Winnibriggs and Threo.

The Allrie Anglican parish church registered in Class II is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The East and West Allington parishes were merged in 1896 and the St James Church at East Allington, the smaller building of the two, was destroyed.

Poet George Crabbe (1754-1832) became a petahana of Muston, Leicestershire, and West Allington in 1789, remaining until 1792. His Natural History Vale of Belvoir was the pioneering study of the district. The English heritage gave the Allington Crabbe residence date as 1790-1814, but he was absent for most of the remaining years.

The Welby family is associated with a village from the 18th century onwards. During the Second World War, Allington Hall became a military hospital. Camp prisoners of war in the village held prisoners of Germany and then Italy. The land was later dissolved in 1947.

Facilities

The first school in the village was set up in a green village in 1847. The school was moved to the site now in 1906. It was extended in 2003-04. Allington with Sedgebrook Church of England Primary School is at Marston Lane, Allington.

The village public house is Welby Arms , which also provides food and accommodation. The Old Manor House, built around 1660, is now a hotel.

Holy Trinity Anglican Church is a member of the Saxonwell Group of Churches. Service is held every Sunday.

The main sports facility is the Allington Playing Field, owned by the Parish Council. The Viking road, Sewstern Lane, passed through the village until 1997, but was diverted to follow the road bridge over A1.

Social groups that meet regularly include morris dancing, gardening, preschool and women's institutions. Village Hall, built in 1929, has been modernized and is often used. This includes doctor surgery.

There is noon, Callcollect bus day to Grantham. The closest railway station is at Bottesford (5 miles, 8 km) and Grantham (5.7 miles, 8.7 km).
